INTRODUCTION

A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a

community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that
exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources. A disaster occurs
when a hazard impacts on vulnerable people. The combination of hazards, vulnerability and
inability to reduce the potential negative consequences of risk results in disaster.

Natural and human-caused disasters affect thousands of people each year. Major adverse
events such as these have the potential to cause catastrophic loss of life and physical
destruction. They are often unexpected and can leave whole communities in shock. Natural
disasters are large-scale geological or meteorological events that have the potential to cause loss
of life or property. Human Disasters include industrial accidents, shootings, acts of terrorism,
and incidents of mass violence. As with natural disasters, these types of traumatic events may
also cause loss of life and property. They may also prompt evacuations from certain areas and
overwhelm behavioral health resources in the affected communities.

Disaster preparedness refers to measures taken to prepare for and reduce the effects of
disasters. That is, to predict and - where possible - prevent disasters, mitigate their impact on
vulnerable populations, and respond to and effectively cope with their consequences, at local,
national and international levels. The goal of disaster preparedness is to lessen the impact of
disasters on vulnerable populations, to ready an organization for an influx of activity, and to
design a coordinated plan that reduces the waste of resources, time, and efforts.

This study will know and will focus only on the Level of Disaster Preparedness of
Selected High Schools and Colleges in the Municipality of Boac, Marinduque.

Chapter III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter will describe and discuss how the researchers will gather the necessary
information and data that will be used for the entire study. It will discuss the research design,
research locale, sources of data, research method, research instruments, and the data gathering
procedure.

Research Design

According to Sukamolson (2016) quantitative research is essentially about the collection

of numerical data in order to explain a particular phenomenon. Furthermore, McDonald and
Headlam (2011) data collection through quantitative research are believed to yield more
accurate and objective information because they are collected using standardized methods, can
be replicated and can be analyzed using sophisticated statistical techniques, unlike qualitative
data.

Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,

mathematical or numerical analysis of data collected through surveys and questionnaires or by
manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.

Research Locale

The research local of this study will be conducted in the selected high schools and
colleges in the municipality of Boac.

Sources of Data

For this study purpose both primary and secondary data are used. The primary data
collected from the selected High Schools and Colleges in the Municipality of Boac. The
secondary data collected from the internet, textbooks, and pdf. These data have been collected
to cover every aspect of the study. The primary data and secondary data having different merits
and demerits and have serves our purpose of the research study. These are explained below:

A. Primary Data

Primary data are information collected by a researcher specifically for a research

assignment. Primary data are original in nature and directly related to the issue or
problem and current data. Primary data which the researcher collects through various
methods like interviews, surveys, questionnaires etc.

Vision: MSC-a premier College in the Region along the field of Instruction, Research, Extension and Production.

B. Secondary Data

Secondary data is classified in terms of its source-either internal or external.

Internal, or in-house data, is secondary information acquired within the organization
where research is being carried out. External secondary data is obtained from outside
sources. There are various advantages and disadvantages of using secondary data.

Research Method

For collection of primary data for this research work survey methods have been used.
Experimental method is not found suitable for this study because the topic is a theatrical topic
and there is no need to have experiments. The Method is explained below:

A. Survey Method

Survey is used to collect quantitative information about items in a population. Surveys are
used in different areas for collecting the data even in public and private sectors. A survey
may be conducted in the field by the researcher. The respondents are contacted by the
research person personally, telephonically or through mail. This method takes a lot of time,
efforts and money but the data collected are of high accuracy, current and relevant to the
topic. When the questions are administered by a researcher, the survey is called a structured
interview or a researcher-administered survey. When the questions are administered by the
respondent, the survey is referred to as a questionnaire or a self-administered survey. It is an
efficient way collecting information from a large number of respondents.

B. Face to Face Interviews

Face to Face interviews remain a popular data collection, the researcher can ask the
respondents to answer the questions orally and record the answers. For this to be a success,
it is important that the researcher be able to speak the home language of the respondents.

Research Instruments

The research instrument used was an open-ended questionnaires and it was divided into two
parts. The first part is composed of personal data from the respondents such as the name, grade
and section, and age. The second is composed of eight (8) main questions.

A. Questionnaire

Questionnaire is a set of questions that has been prepared to ask a number of questions
and collect answers from respondents relating to the research topic. A number of questions

usually in printed or electronic form are to be answered by the individuals. For the
researchers study a purpose a set of questions has been prepared to collect information
relating to the topic of the study. In this study, a structured questionnaire has been used with
different types of questions as closed and open ended.

Closed Ended Questions should be asked when all possible theoretical relevant responses to
a question can be determined in advance at the number of possible responses is limited (de Vos
et al. 2012).

Open Ended Questions can be used if a researcher wants to learn how the respondents think,
to discover what is important to them or to get an answer to a question with many possible
answers.

Population and Sample Size

The research is a systematic study to examine or investigate the issue or problem and
find out the relevant information for solution. For study data are to be collected from the
respondents. It is not possible to collect data from every one of the population. It is easier to
contact a smaller part of the population for data collection. It can be done within a limited time,
efforts and with minimum cost. The respondents of this study will be the Principals and Senior
High School students in the selected schools in Boac, wherein the researchers will randomly
pick 30 students in each selected school. The researchers come up with five (5) different schools
in Boac which are:

1. Marinduque State College

2. Marinduque National High School

3. Educational System Technological Institute

4. St. Marys chuchu hahaha di ko alam

5. Cawit Comprehensive National High School

Data Gathering Procedure

The data will be gathered by the help of the reference books, research articles and
related studies. The researchers also gathered data from the different websites on the internet.
After the survey question has been approved and validated, the researchers gathered the
necessary data such as the number of Senior High School students in the selected schools in the
Municipality of Boac, Marinduque. The researchers will gather the data from thirty (30)
students in each selected schools by distributing the questionnaires. The questionnaires that will
