INTRODUCTION

Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction is a subject designated to STEM students. Reading the
whole content of the book makes a realizations that this subject meant not just for STEM students but for every
students. Maybe the expectations of the education coordinator is that STEM students could learn immediately
as they thought about the intellectual of the students. Through this process, STEM students will work as a
leader and a role model for every student in their respective schools.

Nowadays, there is a fast approach of calamities that would create a big human toll and
damages. Thus, students’ attention are indeed in need and they would be a great response for the nation’s
capacity. The general purpose of this subject is to help students enriching their knowledge about phenomenons
that could possibly hit a place, to learn about the factors of being vulnerable to disasters and to become disaster
resilient which means the sudents can mitigate and prevent affecting from disasters.

The content of this portfolio are the activities, reflections and results of the student owns this.
Activities including Interhouse competitions, class discussions, games, quizzes performed by group and
individual. Reflections can be seen in the personal experience essay. Lastly, the result of the student’s
performance including quizzes, performance task, assignments and 3rd quarterly examination written in table.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ESSAY

Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction Adventure


It was a great journey during my Earth Science Life. Even though it was so sad to move on, I have
to discover more about related to Earth until I met DRRR. This time, it was new and timely relavant from our
Earth’s Issue. It talks about Disaster. When we met, I expected to know more about disasters on how to become
disaster prepared and the sequence of preventing and mitigating disasters. In a short amount of time and
nevertheless have only finished three chapters yet still ongoing, it was a very interesting adventure as my
expectations met by the subject.

In Chapter 1, it discussed about disasters. Hazards for being harsh to people and properties, making
disasters claimed a huge population of humanity. I’ve realized living here in Philippines being prone to
disasters, we were not just the one who ask for help but millions of people around the world also needs help
as they also experienced what we experienced. I’ve realized that it wasn’t the government’s mistakes of being
vulnerable but it was us not believing ourselves to cope up with changes. The lack of informations leads us to
risk. As I read about the concepts of disaster risk, I’ve realized not knowing this is a factor of being prone to
disasters. Chapter 2, Filipinos are exposed to calamaties especially earthquakes. December 29 2018, a 7.2
Earthquake shakes entire Davao Region and it made me to feel worry about every people around me. Without
reading the book, maybe before the earthquake I would possibly panick a lot. It made me realized to learn
about become prepared and ready before an earthquake will occur. Volcanic Eruptions are explained in
Chapter 3 which made me realized same as what I realized when there is an earthquake, realizing what to do
to become disaster invulnerable. Those ideas are very helpful in my daily life.

Through this subject, I’ve learned a lot of things that are very important and this experience will
help me for a better grow of myself. All the topics are high such as the concepts of disaster risk, intensity and
magnitude scales yet I liked the most is the earthquake and volcanic eruptions readiness. There is no lows but
if there is, maybe it would be the subject for not discussing a topic that we don’t know yet very important.

My experience throughout this subject is not easy. A lot of holes I passed every day because
everyday is quiz day. Even though that is it is, its fun. The one thing that makes it negative is if there is more
quiz and more mistakes then the possible outcome will be low so struggle is real. There is nothing wrong about
the Interhouse competitions, class discussions, games, other activities, just the quiz makes me worry. So far,
all my teamates are good and hard working and nothing makes it negative. Talking about my teacher, honestly
he was good and fun, sometime he gives too much activities but we still could do it. Thank you teacher.
