The Relevance of Religion and Belief Systems to the Millennials

Even if we’re religious or not we can’t change the fact that humans are
betrothed in practices such as worshipping, praying, preaching, rituals and these
words are connected to religion. But first what is religion? Religion is a primary
discipline for knowing the boundary questions of life and death, of love and hate, that
characterizes human condition.
Why do people need to learn religion and its belief systems? The reason why
people study is to learn something new and to gain knowledge. But studying religion
is not simply to gain knowledge about the world but wisdom about right relationships
within the world. We study religion in order to learn more about different aspects of
human life, politics, science, literature and art, law, economics. It is an all in one
kind of topic. It gives us the chance to discover the deepest and the most important
ideas and values that somehow can answer these questions, “where do we came
from?”, “why are we here?”, “what is our purpose in life.”, “how can we understand
other people’s beliefs that conflicts with our own?”, “why do we suffer?”, and “ what
life is all about.” If we just dig in deeper. Religious studies are meaningful because
it develops important life skills.

There are advantages that we can get when we study world religions : a) we can
be aware and able to understand people that is different from us , b) we can
comprehend why other religion and cultures live the way they are , c) can lessen
discrimination among other religions, d ) we can develop our own faith, e) we become
inspired by the religious commitment of others in which we tend to deepen our faith,
f) we enrich the practices that we do such as devotional acts. When there are
advantages, there are disadvantages too. The disadvantages on studying religion are:
a) there is a possibility that we could be captivated with another religion and try to
abandon ours, b) we can encounter practices in other religions that we don’t agree
with and label them lower on us in which unfortunately happens today, c) we might
notice many similarities between religions and change your perspective that there’s
no need to have organize belief. These benefits and perils can be an eye -opener, not
just on the millennials but even in adults.

Being a student who had the chance to study religion - At first, I only have a
brief knowledge about it because we had tackled religion ba ck when I was on junior
high and to be honest I wasn’t that fan or interested on learning religion but when I
entered senior high, where the lesson gets harder tha n it was before, I tried to lend
my ears on every discussion that we had in order to understand world religion more.
I can say that I was enlightened with the topmost religion in the world such as
Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, etc. that is completely different
from what I know which is the Christiani ty where my religion includes. Learning
world religion can help us to widen our knowledge in areas such as their history,
cultures and beliefs that we can use when we visit in their countries for us to be aware
on what to do and not what to do.

The most relevant thing that anyone can do especially us as millennials is to

respect each and everyone’s religion and not to brag their beliefs because the future
is held by us, so we need to understand the differences of everybody to have a
nonviolent world ahead since religion is one of the reason why conflicts among
countries occur.
