HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION,

ASSESSMENT AND CONTROLS

Engr. Alexander B. Trillana 1

OSH Consultant
OBJECTIVES
 To identify the different potential hazards in
your work area;
 To carry out risk assessments;
 To develop risk controls to prevent the
occurrence of any potential incident;
 To implement and follow up risk controls;
and
 To review the effectiveness of risk controls.

2
DEFINITION
 HAZARD is any source of  ASSESSMENT is a
potential harm to human systematic evaluation
or adverse health effects, of the workplace
and damage of property and/or other activities
and environment or a which identifies the
combination of these. hazards present and
 RISK is the chance or gives an estimate of

health effect if exposed to  CONTROL is a
a hazard. It is a methodology to
combination of likelihood control the probability
of occurrence and severity and/or impact of
(consequence) of injury or unfortunate event.

ASSESSMENT

THREE-STEP PROCESS:
 Define likelihood;
 Define consequence
 Establish operational risk matrix

11
ASSESSMENT
The risk associated with a hazard is a
reflection of the likelihood that the hazard
will cause harm and severity of that harm.
That is:

RISK = LIKELIHOOD X CONSEQUENCE

Both likelihood and severity (consequence)

can be rated on next slides respectively.

CONTROL
 Risk control is the measure, or measures, put
into place to reduce the risk to an acceptable
level.
 What constitutes an acceptable level must be
able to show that they have taken all relevant
factors into account, including, if appropriate,
the costs of different types of control
measures.
 This will normally require documentary
evidence that this has been done.
