Mammon: Mammon is one of the fallen angels who took the lead in the building

of Pandemonium. He was the most degraded of the angels that fell from Heaven.
While he was in Heaven, he always walked with his eyes downwards on the
golden floor of Heaven. He could never stand or walk erect. Thus he was the most
mean of the fallen angels both mentally and physically:

“The least erected spirit that tells.”

He taught men and tempted them to rob earth. Mammon guided the
angels to dig a hollow on the earth and extract gold from it. From the golden bars,
Pandemonium was built. This was the council chamber of Satan and his followers.
Mammon is personified as a devil who tempts man with earthly/material wealth.
He is worshipped as God of gold and wealth.

Q: How was Pandemonium built? Who was the chief architect?

Ans: Mammon is one of the fallen angels who took the lead in the building of
Pandemonium. Pandemonium was the council chamber of Satan and his followers
which was built in imitation of Heaven.

Mammon taught men and tempted them to rob earth. He guided the angels
to dig a hollow on the earth and extract gold from it. Another group of angels
prepared many cells with liquid fire flowing under it. Another group made moulds
of various shapes and designs. A massive structure was built. It took the shape of
a temple. Neither Babylon nor Cairo could match the beauty of Pandemonium. It
is the devil’s attempt to recreate Heaven. Mammon was the chief architect of
Pandemonium. Pandemonium was built for the fallen angels in the Hell.

Moloch: In Hebrew Moloch means King. He was a Sun God worshipped with the
sacrifice of the first-born male child in fire. The idol of Moloch in the temples is
made of brass. The idol has the head of a calf and the body of a king with hands
extended to receive the sacrifice. The inside of the idol is hollow and filled with
fire. The children who were put into his hand were scorched to death. The cries of
the children who were sacrificed to Moloch were drowned by the sounds of
drums and timbrels. Milton uses Moloch as a fallen angel led by Satan to show the
clash between good and evil or most importantly the Gods and the fallen angels.
Chemosh: Chemosh is the God of Moabites. He is also identified as Baal-Peor. The
name of Chemosh most likely means ‘destroyer’ or ‘Fish-God’ or ‘subduer’. On the
hill of Scandal, atemple was dedicated to him.

Chemosh was in fact the same deity /god as Moloch. He is also worshipped
by same sacrifices. Children were thrown into the altar full of fire. The cries of the
children who were sacrificed to Chemosh were drowned by the sounds of drums
and timbrels. Milton uses Chemosh as a fallen angel led by Satan to show the
clash between good and evil or most importantly the Gods and the fallen angels.

Expalin --------“What though the field be lost? /All is not lost.”

Or,
“To be weak is miserable/ Doing or suffering.”
Or,
“Awake, arise or be forever fallen.”
Or,
“Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.”

Ans: The speeches of Satan in the Book I of Paradise Lost are magnificent.
He impresses us with his impressive personality in the Book I. He is a great leader
to the fallen angels. The villain hero is evil on the grand scale both in speech and
in action. His speeches are full of passion, energy and courage that inspire his
followers to revolt/fight against the Gods in Heaven.
After the defeat to the Gods, the fallen angels are lying in the lake of fire.
But, Satan, the great leader tries to motivate them with his heroic speeches. He
says that everything is not finished. (“What though the field be lost? /All is not
lost.”). He says that weakness is a vice. Rather they should be brave to face the
Gods( “To be weak is miserable/ Doing or suffering.”). He invites the fallen angels
to awake, arise if they do not want to be fallen forever(“Awake, arise or be
forever fallen.”). To Satan it’s better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.( “Better
to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.”).
This speech of Satan shows the brave and passionate nature of Satan and
his power of leadership.
Rape of the Lock
Q: What are tasks assigned to different sylphs?
Ans: Ariel, the guardian sylph, attributes/entrusts different sylphs with different
responsibilities. Zephyretta is to take care of Belinda’s fan. The name of the sylph
comes from Zephyr meaning gentle breeze. Brilliante is to take care of Belinda’s
diamond eardrops. Momentilla is to protect Belinda’s watch. The name comes
from the word ‘momentum’ meaning moment. Crispissa will guard Belinda’s
favourite lock of hair. Ariel gives the responsibility of Belinda’s petticoat to fifty
sylphs who are selected for their abilities. Ariel asks the fifty sylphs to make a
circle around Belinda’s petticoat and to guard it at every point. Their purpose will
be to protect Belinda’s chastity. Ariel himself will take care of Shock, Belinda’s
lapdog.

Q: What are the different punishments to different sylphs for negligence of

their duty?
Ans: Ariel, the guardian sylph, attributes/entrusts different sylphs with different
responsibilities. Sylphs named Zephyretta, Brilliante, Momentilla and Crispissa are
to protect Belinda’s fan, eardrops, watch and lock of hair. Fifty ‘chosen sylphs’ will
take care of Belinda’s petticoat and Ariel himself will guard Shock, Belinda’s
petdog.
If any of the spirits neglects duty and leave Belinda unprotected, they will
be punished by Ariel. They will be punished in the most strictest ways. They will
be confined in phials or chained with pins or plunged/drowned in bitter liquids or
eyes will be put before a needle or, tied like Ixion to the wheels of chocolate mills
or, made to boil into the boiling chocolates. Thus, the punishments of the sylphs
are designed.
