Data Analysis:
1.) Do all atoms of the same element have the same mass? Explain

No, all atoms of the same elements do not have the same mass. Some atoms of the

same element are isotopes. Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have a different

number of neutrons resulting in a different mass from an atom of that element.

2.) Are atomic mass and mass number the same? Explain

No, atomic mass is the weighted average of all the isotopes mass numbers. The

mass number is the weight of the nucleons.

3.) What is the atomic mass of hafnium if out of every 100 atoms, 5 have a mass of 176,

19 have a mass of 177, 27 have a mass of 178, 14 have a mass of 179, and 35 have a

mass of 180?

The atomic mass of hafnium would be 178.55 amu.

4.) Calculate your weighted quarter average

My weighted quarter average would be a 92.05

5.) What is the atomic mass of silicon if 92.21% of the atoms have a mass of 27.997u,

4.70% have a mass of 28.976u, and 3.09% have a mass of 29.974u?

The atomic mass of silicon is 48.68amu.

6.) State one medical use for the radioactive isotopes a-c. Give one use of the isotopes C-

14 and U-238

a. Co-60 is used to sterilize medical equipment.

b. I-131 is used to treat thyrotoxicosis and some types of thyroid cancer that absorb

iodine.

c. Tc-99 is used in nuclear medicine.

d. C-14 is used to date materials containing carbon that are up to 60,000 years old.

e. U-238-Is used in nuclear weaponry to extend the explosive radius of artillery such

as nuclear or atomic bombs.

Conclusion

Dalton’s Atomic Theory concludes that all atoms of a given element are identical.

However one has proved through this experiment and other atomic experiments that

elements have isotopes or atoms that have different mass because they have a different

number of neutrons in the nucleus. Certain isotopes become radioactive because the

nucleus has become unstable. If each bean in this experiment represented a different

isotope of Beanium than the atoms or beans would have to be isotopes because they have

different physical properties just as actual isotopes do. Radioactive isotopes are also used

for human gain in modern society. Certain isotopes that emit X-rays are used to

photograph internal bones and Cobalt is used to sterilize medical equipment. Isotopes of

Uranium and Plutonium are used in Atomic bombs during warfare and c-14 is used for

carbon dating to make discoveries about the past. Isotopes have helped shape the modern

world.
