Topic Proposal

Date: October 15, 2018

Subject: Pediatrics

This year I will be pursuing an independent study in the medical field, with a focus in

Pediatrics. I hope to expand my knowledge of this topic through extensive research and a

mentorship with a Pediatrician.

While I have always been able to picture myself in the future working as a medical

professional, I was never sure of the exact specialty. Throughout my educational career I have

always experienced a certain attraction to science-related courses, this fascination motivated me

to excel in classes that my peers deemed dull and unnecessary, such as biology and medical

terminology. The first time I was able to truly envision myself as a doctor was when I gave a

presentation to my science class in sixth grade on osteoporosis, during my preparation I was

engrossed in the research and began to develop an interest in the medical field. I knew this field

was for me when I looked in the mirror and saw myself dressed in scrubs and a lab coat for the

presentation. My interest in the specific topic of pediatrics derives from my passion for helping

others as well as a love for working with children, which I developed through my place of work,

Best Brains a tuition center for young children. I truly enjoy the feeling I experience when

children from work wave to me with a warm smile and inform me of their unique thoughts.

I believe that the field of Pediatrics best suits me as it seamlessly combines my passions and

experiences.
A major aspect of the Pediatric field that appeals to me is the opportunity to work with

children and parents and most importantly the chance to help them. According to the

Myers-Briggs type indicator, I am an ENFJ-T, one who enjoys service-based activities and

searches for meaningful work. While I am able to work independently, I realized through the

Myers-Briggs test that I could not pursue a career that involves constant independent work.

Being the personality type that I am, I enjoy meeting new people and a genuine interest in the

problems’ of those around me. Pediatrics allows me to meet a variety of people on a day to day

basis and aid these patients by addressing their medical needs. In addition, my public speaking

skills and naturally extroverted personality will greatly benefit me in this career. As during

appointments, Pediatricians have a limited amount of time to establish trust amongst parents and

their oftentimes nervous children. With my dedicated & empathetic personality, I will be able to

quickly gain the trust of my patients so I can effectively treat them. These specific interests and

skills drove me to pursue the topic Pediatrics for my independent study.
