2 Introduction

A watchdog is a device used to protect a system from specific software or

hardware failures that may cause the system to stop responding. The application
is first registered with the watchdog device. Once the watchdog is running on
your system the application must periodically send information to the watchdog
device. If the device doesn't receive this signal within the set period of time it
would execute the proper keystrokes to reboot the machine or restart the
application.

The Watchdog Timer logic requires some initialization by software. At some point
the BIOS or OS may choose to enable the Watchdog Timer. In order to use it, the
BIOS or OS must initialize the Watchdog Timer logic.

There are two ways to configure Watchdog parameters on Winmate PPC & HMI:
Operating System (OS) Level and BIOS Level. User can choose the method of
initializing Watchdog.

Quick Steps to enable Watchdog Utility on your computer:

I. OS Level
 Install Watchdog driver on your computer.
a. Uninstall the old Watchdog driver (If the old driver has been
installed).
b. Install a new version of Watchdog driver.
 Install Watchdog AP on your computer.
 Open Watchdog AP and enable Watchdog.
II. BIOS: Use BIOS settings to enable Watchdog during POST.

Notice that if you enable Watchdog in Windows OS, there is no need to configure
Watchdog parameters in BIOS. The latter will follow AP settings.

2
 You can find Watchdog Utility in the Driver CD that comes with your
device. Refer to Installation Files.
 You can download Winmate Watchdog Utility & Driver from
NOTE Winmate Download Center or Winmate File Share.
