My research project is focused on looking at how ethnic and cultural diversity in America
affects society and the economy. I would like to know how the society and economy are different
because of diversity. Along with that, I would also like to find out if the effects of this diversity

“Americans See Advantages and Challenges in Country’s Growing Racial and Ethnic Diversity,”
and it comes from the Pew Research Center. The source was released on May 8, 2019. This
report is a compilation of surveys done on the topic of diversity in America and how people
perceive diversity in America. The surveys throughout the report indicate that the majority of
Americans like diversity, along with indicating some of the challenges that Americans believe
diversity brings to America. For example, one survey asked if Americans think that diversity
makes a policymaker’s job harder, easier, or if it does not change the difficulty of the job. The
Huynh-2
survey found that a majority of people believe that diversity makes a policymaker’s job harder to
do.
The writer’s purpose in making this report seems to be strictly to inform. The report is
mainly just the results from surveys that are taken on the topic of diversity. The writer’s input or
opinions/beliefs are non-existent in this report and there is only data to be found. The intended
audience of this report seems to be anyone who is doing research on the topic of diversity and
how it is viewed in America. A lot of the data is described and also presented as graphs or charts
where trends can be identified. This makes the data suitable for anyone who is looking for
evidence to back up or develop claims on the topic of views on diversity. This report was written
based off of the survey results for America, which makes it so that the source only represents
how America views diversity, and not other countries. Since a nation’s views and collective
ideology changes over time, the source can only represent the findings near the time the surveys
were taken. This source cannot represent how Americans viewed diversity in the past, or how
they will come to view diversity in the future, as the views would change over time.
The writer of this is Juliana Menasce Horowitz, she has a doctorate in political science
from the University of Maryland, and she is currently the associate director of research at the
Pew Research Center with her expertise listed as “Demographics and Social Trends.” Her
authority on this topic is strong, and the author’s methods of gaining the information necessary
for this source are also written out in the report. The survey results come from the “American
Trends Panel,” a panel consisting of randomly chosen US adults from all over the nation. This
demonstrates that the source is also reliable as well, since the methods of finding the data are
also described.

This source provides me access with solid firsthand data on how Americans view
diversity. It will give me a glimpse into how America views racial and ethnic diversity, which I
feel is an important aspect in analysing how diversity affects society or the economy. The way
that the general population feels about diversity or any topic is something that I feel is a deciding
Rosenberger, Judith. Relational Social Work Practice with Diverse Populations. Springer, 2014
The book “Relational Social Work Practice with Diverse Populations” was published on
June 25, 2013. It was created by Judith B. Rosenberger and it was found on Springerlink, which
was accessed through Sinclair’s library database. The first part of this book starts with laying out
the foundations behind the theory of “relational diversity practice,” while the rest of the book
discusses how that theory can be applied to social work that involves specific demographics. For
example, a chapter from the first part of the book is entitled “Orientation to and Validation of
Relational Diversity Practice” and it describes the history behind the theory of relational social
work theory, along with its contributions/importance and how to apply it. The second part of the
book is titled “racial and ethnic diversities” and the articles that fall into the second part of the
book all discuss how to apply the theory to specific ethnicities within the population, which
include African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asian-Americans. The third, fourth, and fifth part of
the book are titled “religious diversities,” “diversities of sexual identity,” and “diversities
founded on life-altering experience,” respectively. They all also talk about how to apply the
theory from the first chapter to people of various religions or people of various sexual identities.
The last part of the book discusses how to apply the theory to people within demographics such
as war veterans or former prisoners. The main idea throughout this book is addressing what the
Huynh-4
theory of relational diversity practice is, and then describing how it can be applied to various
demographics.
The main purpose of the book is to inform the reader of the theory on “relational diversity
practice” and how to apply that theory to various demographics within the population. The book
also informs the reader about the importance of this theory too, and why it should be applied.
The main audience here seems to be clinicians, social workers, or anyone in a profession where
they will work with a lot of different people on a regular basis. This seems to be the intended
audience since the information that the reader gains from the book will be most useful for those
kinds of professions, and not professions where there is limited contact with other people. The
time that this was written does not seem to have much of an effect on the content, since the book
mainly discusses a theory that has been around for sometime and a theory is something that
typically does not see much change over time. If the book was written earlier, there may be less
information on the theory, and being written later will simply mean that the theory may be
The writer is Judith B. Rosenberger and after searching her, I found that she holds a PhD
in social work and has an extensive list of previous experience within the field, which makes her
extremely knowledgeable with the topic of social work. Her book is a compilation of articles that
others have written, where she would use her expertise to determine if they can represent her
theory well or not. The articles that she compiled are formal in their tone and it seems that they
come from other researchers who are doing graduate/beyond graduate level research.
From this source, I plan to reference the “racial diversities” section of the book and
analyze how the relational diversity practice theory is applied to certain races or ethnicities. I will

use the information from that to also gauge how these races or ethnicities relate to the society

The article “Cultural Diversity in the United States and Its Impact on Human
Development” was published in 2015 by the Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social
Sciences and it was created by Jason VanAlstine, Steven R. Cox, and Dianne M. Roden. It is
made public by the Butler University Libraries. This report discusses the relationships between
human development and cultural, ethnic, language, and religious diversity. The authors discuss if
the relationships are negative or positive and use studies to back up their findings, along with
using the discussion to develop their conclusion that optimizing benefit or positives from
diversity and negating its costs will require strong institutions. The “human development” that is
observed in the report looks specifically at how health, education, and income develop.
The purpose of this report is to inform the reader of how certain aspects of human
development are either positively or negatively affected by diversity. The audience for this report
would be university/college students or researchers who are doing research on subjects that
pertain studying what drives/influences human development. The students or researchers may be
referencing this source for the business or economics aspect, or the public health and well-being
aspect of it. This is since the source describes the correlation cultural diversity has to the
economy in the United states, along with describing its correlation to public health.
Huynh-6
The first author of the report, Jason VanAlstine, is an associate professor of economics at
Indiana University Kokomo’s school of business. The second author is Steven R. Cox, who is a
professor of finance at the same school. The third author is Dianne M. Roden, who is also a
professor of finance at the same school. The three professors each hold a Phd in their respective
fields. I would consider these to be solid credentials and I would consider the source to be
credible since it is a formal report that is published by the Journal of the Indiana Academy of the
Social Sciences. The authors here referenced studies that have been done by others to develop
their own claims and conclusion. The section “Motivation and Contribution” also lays out how
I plan to use this source to look at specifically how ethnic and cultural diversity affects
the economy. From the information in this source, I will also attempt to see what the economy
would be like without diversity and if it would be worse off or better off. There are some
mathematics within the data where the formulas used to relate human develop to diversity are
described, alongside charts that lay out the results from these formulas. I plan to utilize this
specific section since the use of mathematics is known to model how things can behave in a
engineer who is a former president of the University of Dayton’s chapter of the Society of Asian
Scientists and Engineers. In my interview with him, I asked him questions of personal
experiences he has with cultural and ethnic diversity and why he believes it is important or not.
This interview was done on June 19th. From this interview, I learned about his personal
experiences with diversity and why he thinks it is important, especially in the workplace.

The purpose of this interview is to inform. Here, I am the audience and I am being
informed on Kenneth’s personal experiences that he has had with diversity, along with his views
on it. When it was taken has some effect on it, as a person’s opinions and views/experiences
change gradually over time. Where it was taken is also relevant here, since where a person lives
Kenneth is the writer, as he is the one who filled out the interview questions. His
credibility comes from the fact that he is involved with an organization that advocates for more
Asian-American minorities in the workplace. He is also a student who has past internship
experience in a professional career and so he may have firsthand experience with seeing how
diversity is important or not important in the workplace. He does have adequate information
This source is relevant to my project since it provides me with a firsthand look into how a
person in a professional career who is also in organizations that advocate for diversity might
view it. This is important since the other sources that I will be referencing are mostly just large-
scale research projects that provide a limited view into how someone’s firsthand experience with

This article is written by Chisu Teresa Ko, who holds a PhD from Columbia University

are “Asians in Argentina” and “Racial Discourses in Argentina.” The article is entitled “From
whiteness to diversity: crossing the racial threshold in bicentennial Argentina.” In this article, Ko
studies Argentina’s shift in collective mindset from wanting to be an ideal nation that is
reminiscent of a European nation where most of the people are white, to wanting to be a
culturally diverse nation that embraces the fact that it has many different ethnicities and races,
instead of just attempting to sweep it under the rug like they were originally doing. She also uses
her/other studies of this topic to develop her argument that Argentina is looking to the modern
world in order to model themselves after in regard to how they view diversity.
Her purpose is to persuade, she is using her references and studies to develop her
argument. Her audience would be students or researchers who also have an interest in studying
aspects of society within Argentina or some of the history within Argentina. This piece is written
in 2013 which was shortly after Argentina announced in 2010 that they are no longer that white
European nation that they identified themselves and that they will embrace ethnic and cultural
diversity more within the nation. The time that this was written has somewhat of an effect on it,
since more time passing after the original event may change some circumstances within the
situation.
The writer here is Chisu Teresa Ko, her Phd from Columbia University and her title as an
College are what I believe make her to be a credible author. She does have access to adequate
information, as she seems to reference observations others have made in studies in Argentina.
For example, one study that she references looks at the lives of Japanese people who are

This report is written by Faezeh Karimi and Petr Mautous and it is entitled “Mapping
diversity and inclusion in student societies: A social network perspective” It was written and
published in 2006 and both authors are in the faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of
Sydney. In their article, they both observe data on the social groups that are formed within the
study body and how social groups overlap or are separated from each other. They also analyze
how the extracurricular activities affect how these groups are formed as well and then use that to
describe the way that university policies should be written if there is a goal of increasing the
social inclusion among the student body. The source can be found in the journal series
“Computers in Human Behavior” and it is accessed through Sinclair’s Library Database. This
data also supports the claim that diversity in higher education has positive contributions to the
lives of students and that these effects are obtained through having diverse groups participate in
The author’s purpose here is to persuade. There are claims that are being made on how
the policy should be made to move towards the goal of more student inclusion and how to

policymakers or university administration, as the information and arguments that the article
makes would be most beneficial to anyone who can influence university policy. The location of

The writers are Faezeh Karimi and Peter Mautous, two faculty members at the University
of Sydney. They are credible in this context since they are involved with university
administration and have the ability to draw from experience. Their involvement with university
management also give them the ability to see what may work or what may not work then it
comes to policies. They also do have access to the adequate information that they need since they
can study how the student body is affected along with surveying their fellow faculty members.
The authors also do have access to other studies that pertain to social interactions within the
student body. The reliability of the source comes from the fact that the two authors also hold Phd
degrees within the field of engineering and are currently university faculty, which means that
they are involved with research and academia. The place that the information/studies comes from
is important here, since different countries or universities will each have their own unique
student body, with each student body presenting a different set of circumstances. The time that
this was written also matters too, since circumstances that apply to a population change over time
as the population changes. This means that the article may end up being inaccurate or irrelevant
in the future or past when circumstances are different than what they are now.
I plan to use the discussions about diversity within this report to examine how diversity
and student bodies are related to one another. With this, I will also tie in my own
observations/experiences with university in America. I feel that this is important to have since a
significant portion of the American population consists of university students all throughout

This source is a video recording of a Ted Talk that was posted on Youtube on Feb 15,
2018. The video is entitled “It's (past) time to appreciate cultural diversity” and the Ted Talk is
given by Hayley Yeates, who is currently a Senior Change and Communications Manager. In the
video, she uses her personal experiences as an Asian-Australian who was raised in Australia her
whole life and how her Asian appearance led to some unrealistic expectations or negative
judgement during her time at university. She uses this to develop her argument that it is

country’s general population of everyday adults agrees to accept it. Otherwise, it will not have
the effect that Yeates seems to intend for it to have. The time that this video was released does
not matter as much, as a general trend across the world seems to be that people more accepting

relevance, since the main message here is something that Yeates seems to want people from all
The writer is Hayley Yeates, who composed the presentation and wrote the
corresponding speech that goes with it. She is credible since she has a master’s in project
management, along with other similar studies within the field of business. She also works as a

change and communications manager for the Westpac Group. Given her master’s degree in
project management involves working with people and that a career in business can involve a lot
of human interaction, it seems that Yeates is credible in discussing the importance of accepting
cultural diversity. Her information comes from her own experiences, and it seems that she has an
extensive list of personal experiences that will provide an adequate amount of information for
this source. The source is reliable since Ted is typically seen as trustworthy in the eyes of most
people among the public, and the credentials that Yeates has also adds to this being a reliable
source.
I plan to use this source in my paper when addressing the importance of cultural
diversity. A main theme within the video is the importance of cultural diversity, which I also
plan to use in order to make it so that I can have a basis for portraying the importance of my
topic.
