Reflection – Advertising Lab

1. Introduce the lab and which mathematical techniques were used.

a. In this lab, we were to figure out how many radio/tv ads were needed in order to
stay under budget. There were many different types of techniques were used
throughout this project. The main was solving system of equations, which is what
was used to find the points to solve the inequalities.

2. Do you think this project shows how math can be applied to the real world?

a. If “yes”, please elaborate why are the results important or beneficial?

1. Yes, I think that this project shows how math can apply to real life. In any
part of your life, you have to figure out a budget and what can be
purchased or used with that budget. For example, you figure out what bills
are due and what else can be spent in order to stay under your net income.

3. Give an example of someone other than a business owner/manager that might be interested in
this type of analysis?

a. An example that I can think of is a farmer who is trying to find the minimum and
maximum of fencing in order to fence up his animals.

4. Can you think of or find an example of (Hint: see the exercises in your text) another
application where linear programming could be used to optimize a situation? Be specific.

a. As mentioned above, there are many other businesses that may use this type of
analysis. A merchandising company may use a similar process to figure out how
many of each item to purchase, while staying under budget in order to make a
profit.

5. If you were the business owner in this lab and the manager brought you the results of the lab,
why would it be important for the manager to be clear about the process and be able justify
her conclusion?

a. It would be important to see this information because it supports a business

decision. I would need to see how the solution was determined so that way it’s
under budget and future business is not at risk.

6. Did this assignment change your opinion of the usefulness of math?

a. Write at least one paragraph stating what ideas changed and why.

1. Yes, I think that this did help me change and understand how math is

math” and I always have my calculator to solve basic math. However,

when it comes to figuring out how much soil I need for my garden boxes, I
would be able to get the exact amount rather than over or under buying. I
have realized that math is more than a class. I have more appreciation for
it and think that I will use it a lot in my future of utilizing my business
degree.
