Executive Summary
1. SUPPLY/DEMAND SITUATION
The provisional data reveal that the total nutrient offtake during January 2018 was about 356
thousand tonnes compared to 271 thousand tonnes during January 2017, showing an increase of
31.6 per cent. Nitrogen offtake was 297 thousand tonnes which also increased by 30.2 per cent
whereas phosphate offtake was 55 thousand tonnes showing an increase of 39.2 per cent over
January 2017. In fertilizer product terms, urea offtake during January 2018 was 539 thousand
tonnes, which witnessed an increase of 32.7 per cent and DAP offtake was 92 thousand tonnes,
which registered an increase of 50.9 per cent as compared to January 2017.
Cumulative fertilizer nutrient offtake during Rabi 2017-18 (October-January) was about 1969
thousand tonnes, which decreased by 11.3 per cent compared with same timeframe of last Rabi
2016-17. Offtake of nitrogen decreased by 9.3 per cent, phosphate offtake decreased by 16.7 per
cent while potash offtake increased by 58.5 per cent as compared to Rabi 2016-17. In product
terms, urea offtake was 2233 thousand tonnes during Rabi 2017-18 which decreased by 8.0 per
cent while DAP offtake was 1132 thousand tonnes which decreased by 16.5 per cent over same
time frame of Rabi 2016-17.
Total production of all fertilizer products during January 2018 was about 578 thousand tonnes.
Out of this, urea was 457 thousand tonnes, which is 79 per cent of the total production. DAP
production was 31 thousand tonnes. The other products were CAN 42 thousand tonnes, Nitrophos
38 thousand tonnes, SSP 6 thousand tonnes and 4 thousand tonnes of NPKs. Imported supplies
were 72 thousand tonnes which included 65 thousand tonnes of DAP, 4.5 thousand tonnes of SOP
and 1 thousand tonnes of MOP during January 2018.
2. PRICE TREND
Domestic: Price of almost all the fertilizer increased slightly during January 2018 compared
with December 2017.
International: The prices of Fob bulk China urea fluctuated from US $ 300 to 320/ton. FOB
Prilled bulk Middle East price was quoted at US $ 260 to 262/ton. DAP prices in US Gulf were
quoted around US $ 360-353/ton fob bulk. MAP and TSP prices were recorded in the range of US
$ 375-405 and 290-300/ton, respectively during January, 2018. Ex-Karachi price of urea was in
the range of Rs.1940 to Rs. 2364 per 50 kg bag, while Ex-Karachi price of DAP was in the range
of Rs. 2940 to Rs. 3049 per 50 kg bag.
During Rabi 2017-18, total availability of urea is estimated to be around 3516 thousand tonnes.
This includes 2720 thousand tonnes of domestic production and 796 thousand tonnes of opening
inventory. Offtake during Rabi 2017-18 is expected to be 3033 thousand tonnes leaving behind
300 thousand tonnes of opening balance for coming Kharif 2018.
Total availability of DAP is estimated around 1437 thousand tonnes during Rabi 2017-18. This
includes 367 thousand tonnes of opening stock, 698 thousand tonnes of imported supplies and 372
thousand tonnes of domestic production. Offtake of DAP would be 1371 thousand tonnes, leaving
a closing balance of 66 thousand tonnes for next season.
MRR NO. 2/2018
1. INTRODUCTION
This note reviews the product-wise and nutrient-wise fertilizer supply/demand situation during
January 2018, the 4th month of Rabi 2017-18 season, and presents an outlook for the remaining
two months in respect of urea and DAP. It also includes the average domestic retail and
international prices of fertilizer products, namely UREA, DAP, TSP, MAP and SOP.
Total nutrient offtake during January 2018 was about 356 thousand tonnes, which increased by
31.6 per cent over January 2017. Offtake of nitrogen was about 297 thousand tonnes, which
increased by 30.2 per cent over January 2017. Phosphate offtake was about 55 thousand tonnes,
which increased by 39.2 per cent, potash offtake also witnessed an increase of 31.8 per cent. In
product terms, urea offtake was 539 thousand tonnes, witnessing an increase of 32.7 per cent.
Offtake of DAP was about 92 thousand tonnes, which increased by 50.9 per cent over January
2017 (Table 1).

Aggregated data in Table 2 reveal that cumulative fertilizer nutrient offtake during October, 2017
to January 2018, was 1969 thousand tonnes showing a decrease of 11.3 per cent over the same
timeframe of last Rabi 2016-17. Out of total offtake, nitrogen was 1361 thousand tonnes.
Phosphate 588 thousand tonnes and potash 20 thousand tonnes (Table 2).
Data in Table 2 also indicate that urea and DAP offtake was 2233 thousand tonnes (8.0 per cent
less than same time frame of Rabi 2016-17) and 1132 thousand tonnes (16.5 per cent lower than
same time frame of Rabi 2016-17).

Total production of all fertilizer products during January 2018 was about 578 thousand tonnes.
Out of this, urea was 457 thousand tonnes, which is 79.0 per cent of the total production. DAP
production was 31 thousand tonnes. The other products were CAN 42 thousand tonnes, Nitrophos
38 thousand tonnes, SSP 6 thousand tonnes and 4 thousand tonnes of NPKs. Imported supplies
were 72 thousand tonnes which includes 65 thousand tonnes of DAP, 4.5 thousand tonnes of SOP
and 1 thousand tonnes of MOP during January 2018 (Table 3).

During January 2018 urea offtake increased in all the provinces except Balochistan. Urea offtake
increased by 35, 39 and 15 per cent in Punjab, Sindh and KP respectively. Its Offtake decreased
by 14 per cent in Balochistan.
DAP offtake during January 2018 decreased in Balochistan by 50 per cent whereas it increased by
48, 133 and 13 per cent in Punjab, Sindh and KP respectively.

6.1. Urea
Total urea availability during January 2018 was about 795 thousand tonnes, including an opening
balance of 338 thousand tonnes and domestic production of 457 thousand tonnes (Table 5). Urea
offtake during January 2018 was 539 thousand tonnes. The closing balance at the end of January
2018 was 256 thousand tonnes.
6.2. DAP
Total DAP availability was 268 thousand tonnes during the month under review. It comprised 172
thousand tonnes of opening balance, 65 thousand tonnes imported supplies and 31 thousand
tonnes of domestic production (Table 5). DAP offtake was about 92 thousand tonnes. The closing
balance works out to be 176 thousand tonnes.
During Rabi 2017-18, total availability of urea is estimated to be around 3516 thousand tonnes.
This includes 796 thousand tonnes of opening balance and 2720 thousand tonnes of domestic
production. The offtake during Rabi 2017-18 is expected to be 3033 thousand tonnes leaving
behind 300 thousand tonnes of opening balance for coming Kharif 2018.
Total availability of DAP is estimated around 1437 thousand tonnes during Rabi 2017-18. This
includes 367 thousand tonnes of opening stock, 698 thousand tonnes of imported supplies and 372
thousand tonnes of domestic production. The estimated offtake of DAP would be 1371 thousand
tonnes, leaving a closing balance of 66 thousand tonnes for next season.
8. FERTILIZER PRICES
Average price of urea (Sona) increased slightly by 0.1 per cent, while price of urea (tara)
remained the same during January 2018. The price of DAP increased by 0.4 per cent as compared
to December 2017. The price of SSP (G) also increased by 0.3 per cent while that of CAN by 0.7
per cent over December, 2017.
The prices of Fob bulk China urea fluctuated from US $ 300 to 320/ton. FOB Prilled bulk Middle
East price was quoted at US $ 260 to 262/ton. DAP prices in US Gulf were quoted around US $
353-365/ton fob bulk. MAP and TSP prices were recorded in the range of US $ 375-405 and 290-
300/ton, respectively during January, 2018. Ex-Karachi price of urea was in the range of Rs.1940
to Rs. 2364 per 50 kg bag, while Ex-Karachi price of DAP was in the range of Rs. 2940 to Rs.
3049 per 50 kg bag.
