Summary
 What is it?

An annual project for teaching Basic Life Support at Mosques on same day &
same time.

 What is the primary vision behind it/ why is it unique?

Unite. Inspire. Serve.

The main vision behind FIMA Mosque Lifesavers is to unite the Muslim
medical community together and inspire them towards serving the
community.

By a grassroots and inspirational campaign like this, we can inspire the

hearts and minds of the Muslim doctors in the country and connect them to
the Mosques, but also to the local IMA as the hub for such innovative
activities that utilizes their unique skills in the most effective way.

 What are the secondary benefits behind it?

FIMA will help create a National Basic Life Support training programme
using the Mosque infrastructure and the National IMA manpower.

1. Grassroots activism for IMA connecting directly to local population

2. Opening avenue for future health promotion using the same model
3. Reduced deaths nationally from out of hospital Cardiac Arrest
4. Shared project between all IMAs will increase practical unity
5. Excellent dawah initiative especially to non-Muslim population

 What does the project need from FIMA?

We would like this project to be reviewed for consideration to be an official

FIMA project, piloted in UK and spread organically across member branches.

History of Mosque Lifesavers so far
 When is Mosque Lifesavers day?

So far, it is taking place in last Saturday of September each year. However,

this date can be changed after consultation. The only caveat must be that all
countries do it on the same day for maximum motivation & publicity impact.

 Development of the project?

The project is in the 4th year in the UK.

2014 – 3 Mosques in London.
2015 – 15 Mosques in 8 cities in UK
2016 – 35 Mosques in 15 cities in the UK
2017 – 60+ Mosques in 26 cities in the UK

 Is it just for Doctors?

No. Anyone who has accreditation in Basic Life support can help teach.

 How has the team developed?

The project started with a small team based in London. Thereafter, we have
added dedicated individuals and increased the size of the project in
proportion to our manpower so that it remains sustainable.

 How is the team chosen?

We have an online recruitment drive every January and applicants have to

complete an application form. The most suitable candidates will be given
positions by the IMA. The rest can be volunteers.

What are the proposed practical steps for FIMA?
1.Understand the vision

FIMA Exec committee to agree with the

vision of Mosque Lifesavers as a
grassroots project that aims to unite
health professionals in member IMAs
together and inspire them to serve their
local community.

2. Build the FIMA Lifesavers team

Build a FIMA Lifesavers team that is

responsible for international
coordination of this project with
national IMAs running it in their
respective countries.

The FIMA Lifesavers team will assist

new countries coming on board and will
work on international level.

3. Help develop Lifesavers in IMA’s

The Mosque Lifesavers campaign has

already started in the UK, but a FIMA
Lifesavers team will help take this
project to another country and assist
this development.

We should start with one or two test

countries and grow organically from
there.

The vision

Why is it important to start with a clear vision?

Without a clear vision for the project, then people will join for a variety of
reasons. At the start this might not be a problem, but when these different
goals lead to a difference of opinion – the team will fracture.

Also, clarity of vision and having an inspirational vision will attract many
people to the project who would not normally be associated with it or the IMA.

Why should the primary vision not be to provide Basic Life Support?

While this is a good outcome, if the primary vision is to provide Basic Life
Support then people will think of other ways that they can achieve this without
the Mosque or the IMA. They may consider secular programmes or asking us
to help out in Government initiatives.

The primary vision needs to encompass the Mosque element that makes this
project unique and the Muslim Healthcare Professionals who will deliver it.

How can we sell the vision to potential team members or volunteers?

We advise that a combination of methods are used such as one to one calls,
informal meetings and formal presentations to potential interested parties.

Within each of these methods, a number of things are to be highlighted about

the vision such as how it is extremely ambitious without being impossible, how
it will transform the lives of many people and how it is potentially bridging the
gap between medical professionals and the Mosques in a grassroots way.

It is not a one-time speech or lecture. Selling the vision is a continuous

process of inspiring, reminding and re-inspiring.

Build the National team

We have the dream (vision) now, what do we do next?

We must build the core National Team that will deliver this project for the IMA.
Without this team, no other step is possible. This team is required for all the
next steps and therefore their loyalty, skills and dedication must be
unquestionable.

What roles are there in the National Team?

National
Director

Volunteer Vice-
Training Director

General
Publicity
Secretary

Finance

How do we find this National Team?

In the first few years it will be people already attached or known to the IMA.
However, as the project grows, we can institute an application process where
anyone can apply and roles are allocated on a merit basis.

What are the responsibilities of each role?

* National Director/ Vice-Director  To inspire and lead the team to vision

* General Secretary  Monitor all departments and regions are working
* Finance  Help secure some funding to print posters and to have meetings
* Publicity  Create poster, advertisements for the Mosque Lifesavers day
* Volunteer Training  Organise the volunteer training day and webinars

Recruit the Regional Teams

Now we have a strong National Team, what do we do next?

We must build the regional teams. The reason for this is that the National
Team need to be dealing with issues at a National level. They cannot be
directly connected to the grassroots as the Mosques will be too widespread
and too many. The regional team needs to do this.

Can you give some examples of Regional teams?

UK  London, Midlands, North, South, Scotland, Wales etc…

Turkey (Istanbul)  Fatih, KasimPasha, Beyoglu, Besiktas, Eyup etc…
Malaysia  Penang, Selangor, Johor, Sarawek, Sabah, Perak etc…
USA  New York, Texas, Florida, Illinois, California, Seattle etc…

How do the regional teams fit into the National team?

National
Lifesaver Team

Regional X Region Y Regional Z

Mosque A
Lifesaver Team

Mosque
Lifesaver Team

How do we get a regional team?

We start in a region the IMA is strong in and has a good active population of
Muslim healthcare professionals. As the project grows in popularity, new
regions are added on. Organically the project grows throughout the country.

What roles are in the regional team?

The Regional Team is a mirror image of National team with the same roles.

Recruit Mosque leads & Mosques

Now we have a National Team and a Regional Team. What next?

Now we recruit Mosque Leads. These are individuals who are willing to take
the responsibility to be the team leader at their local mosque.

What are the requirements for being a Mosque Lead?

The individual must have training in Basic Life Support and leadership skills.

Does it have to be their local Mosque?

Yes, we recommend this very highly. The reason for this is because we want
the Mosque Lead to make a connection with their local mosque and get more
involved. This is more likely in a mosque that he or she knows well and they
know him or her.

Also, it helps with logistics since they are much more likely to get approval
from the Mosque Committee than a stranger will. In addition, each mosque
has its own flavour and issues that they take seriously. Some mosques allow
sisters to participate, others do not. In some mosques they have lots of
educated people and in another they might be less educated. The Mosque
Lead will know this about their own local mosque.

How do we sign up a Mosque?

We don’t sign up Mosques. We sign up Mosque Leads. It is the responsibility

of these people to sign up the Mosques by speaking to the committees and
the Imams. If the Mosque agrees with (1) the date (2) the format of the project
then they are signed up.

Why does it have to be a mosque?

There are many other places that can hold this training, but if we remember
the vision of the project we will realize that the aim of making a grassroots
projects that unites, inspires and serves the community will work much better
if we focus on the Mosques rather than a multitude of locations such as
schools, parks and community centres.

Volunteers & Training day

We now have a National team, a regional team and Mosque leads as well
as their mosques signed up. What next?

Organise training days so that the Mosque leads can be educated about the
project and how to deliver it.

Are we going to teach them Basic Life Support?

No. To be a Mosque Lead, the person must know Basic Life Support and be
able to lead a team. So, the training is NOT in Basic Life Support as the
Mosque Lead should be proficient in this.

What is the content of the Training day?

An introduction to the Islamic Medical Association & Lifesavers project

Pre-event preparation
How to deliver the presentation on the day + the 4-step teaching technique
What steps to take after the event?
Q&A

What happens if people miss the Training day?

We organize a separate session online using webinar software.

Resources & Budget

What is the budget for Lifesavers project?

The current BIMA Mosque Lifesavers project has had ZERO budget until now.
This is to highlight that we do not need money to operate this project since the
2 basic ingredients – a Muslim healthcare professional and a Mosque – are
free.

But don’t we need some money to print posters?

Yes, this is nice but not essential. The cost of printing is minimal as we do not
print many posters and rely on whatsapp and social media + word of mouth.

Where do we get mannequins from?

This proposal for Mosque Lifesavers is designed to NOT require mannequins

or dolls for resuscitation. The reason for this is because many countries and
areas do not need or have access to them

How can we teach Basic Life Support without the Mannequins?

We will do it by using human beings as the example rather than a dummy.

This has some limitations in making it difficult to practice compressions, but
otherwise it is not a big problem.

Advertising & publicity

How do we advertise the Mosque Lifesavers event?

We use all the different methods:

 Social media channels
 Email lists
 Advertising with posters in local community
 Posters in Mosque and announcement after jummah

What is the most important method of advertising?

Word of mouth in the local community by the Mosque Lead and the volunteers
who are from the community themselves.

How does the above poster work?

We will all have the same poster design worldwide (this increases the feeling
of unity) but we will give each Mosque the ability to edit the details at the
bottoms of the poster – i.e. Mosque name, location, contact details and time
of event (always after zuhr prayer)

Running Mosque Lifesavers day

Where does the event take place?

We use the main mosque prayer hall, but we can use any space in the
mosque that is suitable.

How long does the whole event take place?

 Pre-event  1 hour
 Event  Approx. 1 hour (maybe 1hr 30mins max)
 Post-event  30 mins

What do we do before the event?

1. We arrive at least one hour early to set up the hall for the training
2. We have a volunteer meeting to run through the plan for the Lifesavers
3. We set up the projector and check that the videos work
4. We situate ourselves in the best locations (near exits) to catch
audience
5. We set up a registration desk to take contact details

What do we do during the event?

1. We do an introduction to the IMA

2. We explain why learning Basic Life Support is important
3. Video of cardiac arrest  live demonstration  individual practice
4. Video of collapse with pulse  live demonstration  individual practice
5. Video of choking  live demonstration  individual practice
6. Question and answers
7. Conclusion

Post-event

What do we do after the event?

1. We clear up so that there is no mess in the Mosque

2. We ask all attendees to fill out a feedback form and give them
certificate of attendance
3. We ask all volunteers and the Mosque Lead to fill out feedback and
give them certificate
4. We share videos and pictures on social media to inspire others

What happens to the team after the event?

We ask one of the volunteers from the Mosque team to become the Mosque
lead next year. Then the Mosque lead to become part of the Regional team
and so on…

What happens with the feedback forms after the event?

We use these to evaluate and improve the event each year. However, it is
also a valuable source of data to write research papers evaluating the
attitudes of Muslim community to health matters.

We want Mosque Lifesavers to be one of the first evidence based projects in

the community which is as well researched as any scientific paper.

Annual Dinner & awards

Why hold an Annual Dinner and awards ceremony?

We want to keep volunteers motivated but also to increase team bonding. The
best way to do this is to arrange an Annual Dinner that takes place after the
Lifesavers day.

What happens at this Annual Dinner?

 We showcase the results of feedback from this year Lifesavers

 We review pictures and funny video clips from the event this year
 We remind everyone of the other activities of the IMA
 We thank the teams for their hard work and dedication
 We give awards for the Mosque that engaged the community the most
or the team that came up with the best way to enhance the training

What is the advantage of the Annual Dinner for the IMA?

It serves as the best single way of recruiting people to get involved next year,
but also to take a more proactive role in the IMA. It also allows us to approach
media in a controlled manner to highlight the work of the IMA.

What is the International element to the Annual Dinner?

We envision a date when all the Annual Dinners take place in the same
evening inshaAllah. This means that we can have a live video-link between
different countries.
