INVESTIGATORY

PROJECT
(PHYSICS LAB 2)

ABSTRACT:

This investigatory project, “does height matters in sports”, is a research that will
analyze the effects of differences in height regarding into sports. This research’s
purpose is to make the reader know the effects of height, if does really matter or
not. The advantages of heights may vary into different sports. And other sports
like race horse jockey doesn't necessarily limit anyone's ability to participate in a
particular sport. However, sports like basketball and football, being tall in height
will certainly give you advantage and the best to show off your game. In this
project, we will be making ourselves involved and analyze the advantages and
disadvantages of tall and short people. We will research visually and digitally,
then after learning and getting some ideas we will start to try them ourselves. This
involves us playing basketball, volleyball and badminton. The data shows, that
an average professional basketball player’s height is most likely 6’7 in height.
While in NFL (soccer) the average height is 6’2, 6’1 in baseball and tennis and
many more. To conclude, the height in sports does really matter because
tallness in height will give the player the advantage to play the game easier
and more power but luck of speed, while shorter players may luck in power but
has a lot of agility and much more accurate shooting, spiking ability than taller
players. In short, taller people are stronger but slower and shorter people are
most likely light in weight and can be faster than taller people. But height will not
necessarily affect your ability to play the sports, it may be an advantage but
skills and hard work still matters the most.

“Does height matter in sports?”

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

The main objective of the project is to convince and give knowledge to the

reader if height does really matter in sports? This project also justifies the laws of

physics regarding into the certain height of the player if does a great impact on

how he/she plays.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

For the first experiment our objective is to prove which height does the best

performance in basketball. This includes, shooting from the free throw line, 3

points line and half court. It also includes the dribble speed and defensive skill of

the player. Next for badminton our objective is to prove which height can score

better, and also who can hit the shuttlecock harder and firmer. For volleyball

who can block, spike and receive better.

3
METHODOLOGY:

Our proposed method to complete this investigatory project is to take on

research more often, not only digitally but also observing our surroundings

particularly in sports. We observe each sport that we decided to tackle for this

research, we visualize the players certain height as well as the skills and potential

involved for each given height. We will also try them ourselves to prove and

execute this project and discover the physics and scientific study behind this

investigatory work. Then after enough observation and research our next

method to fulfill this research is by assessing our most known sports to execute

and answer this investigatory project. For basketball we will try to shoot as many

we can and see how difference in height can affect our shooting capability.

Next for volleyball we will try to win and get the most points per set. For

badminton we will try as well to get the most points and which player can

execute the best. And for the last step we will try to identify is height does really

matter in such sport or not.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

DOES HEIGHT MATTER?

Apparently, size does matter: More women than men are picky about the

height of their dates, according to a new study published in the Journal of

Family Issues. ... While only 37 percent of men had a height restriction, a

whopping 55 percent of women said they would only date tall guys.

6
In football, shorter players tend to be running backs or defensive backs. And

while height doesn't necessarily reflect your ability, because hard work and skill

are the most important factors, height can influence what sports you choose

and where you channel your efforts to get better.

Besides obvious examples, such as race horse jockeys, the height of an athlete

doesn't necessarily limit anyone's ability to participate in a particular sport. What

height does impact, however, is your ability to play certain positions. For

instance, almost all basketball centers are the tallest or among the tallest players

on their team. In football, shorter players tend to be running backs or defensive

backs. And while height doesn't necessarily reflect your ability, because hard

work and skill are the most important factors, height can influence what sports

you choose and where you channel your efforts to get better.

Advantages of Height

In general, taller athletes have advantages over shorter athletes in many sports. A

taller boxer with a longer reach can make contact with his punches while keeping

his head out of his opponent's reach. Taller swimmers can cover more distance

and outreach their shorter opponents. Taller basketball players can more easily

block shots and out-rebound shorter players. Taller quarterbacks can see over the

line of scrimmage easier than shorter passers, while taller volleyball players have

an advantage at the net because they usually can strike the ball at a greater

height and block shots more effectively

7
When Shorter is Better

The main advantages shorter athletes often have are quickness and agility, which

is why you're much more likely to see a 5-foot-10 running back than one 6 foot 10.

Backs who run lower to the ground and can get under the pads of defenders offer

a smaller, more compact target than a taller, lankier player. That same kind of

quickness can be helpful in basketball when shorter, more agile players have to

get past taller, slower opponents. And in gymnastics, being shorter, lighter and

strong for their size gives gymnasts an advantage over taller gymnasts.

Height and Running

Running is a sport in which having longer legs can be an advantage because you

have a longer stride, but because running requires you to lift your entire body off

the ground, shorter and lighter runners have an advantage over their taller and

larger counterparts. This is why sprinters tend to be taller than distance runners.

Over a short distance, the extra work required by the body to move a larger

athlete is rather negligible. But in a marathon, for instance, mile after mile of

exertion gives the shorter runner a more distinct advantage. To illustrate the point,

Carl Lewis, one of the greatest sprinters and long jumpers in Olympic history, is

about 6 foot 2, while Frank Shorter, one of the all-time great American

marathoners, was 5 foot 10

8
Skill and Hard Work

Sports such as baseball and soccer have great players of all heights. Major

League Baseball's American League MVPs, for instance, have included 5-foot-9

Dustin Pedroia in 2008 and 6-foot-3 Alex Rodriguez in 2007. While height might

affect which sports kids choose to pursue, such as shorter kids seeking out

gymnastics and taller kids being encouraged in basketball, ultimately their

ability in any given sport will be equal to the time and effort they put into it.

Shorter kids who love basketball might end up playing at a higher level than

their taller peers simply because they work harder

ANALYSIS OF DATA

All activities which are part of human behavior were subject to a long-term

development. Let us take throwing, which is regarded a basic motor activity, as

an example. In the deep past, throwing was necessary for feeding and defense.

At present, throwing has lost its importance as one of the above mentioned

activities but it is involved in different sports to a great extent (e.g. athletics,

handball, baseball, etc.). The task of a prehistoric hunter was to hit the target

precisely to get food. The aim of a present-day athlete is to throw the javelin as

far as possible. The result of the activity in both examples can be considered a

performance. Performance is understood as an extent to which motor task is

accomplished. With the prehistoric hunter, performance is evaluated

dichotomically: hitting the target or missing and it is not restricted by any rules. In

the case of the athlete, performance is evaluated following rules of the sports

11
discipline which were set in advance, it is expressed by the length of the throw

and is understood as a sports performance. An ability to achieve a given

performance repeatedly is referred to as efficiency. The aim of sports training is

to achieve maximum individual or team efficiency in a selected sports discipline

limited by rules. Reaching maximum efficiency in any activity is not possible

over a day. Efficiency is conditioned by several interrelated areas. Sports training

focuses on reaching maximum efficiency in motor abilities connected to a

certain sports discipline. Supposed performance depends on motor ability and

motor skill which are closely related to the sports discipline. Motor abilities can

be described as relatively stable sets of inner genetic presuppositions needed to

carry out locomotive activities. They include force, speed, endurance,

coordination and flexibility. Motor abilities are manifested on the outside by

sports skills. Sports skills are presuppositions needed for implementing

performance in a selected sports discipline which is limited by rules.

CONCLUSION

Height can significantly influence success in sports, depending on how the

design of the sport is linked to factors that are height-biased due to physics and

biology. The balance of the intricate array of links will determine the degree to

which height plays a role in success. All humans experience growth during the

early stages of life. For youth athletes, body composition and size are often a

predictor of strength and power when relative to chronological age. Sports

performance professionals may find it useful to monitor anthropometrics, such as

height and weight, in order to determine periods of peak growth within a child’s

development. Alternatively, it is just as critical to determine periods of stunted

growth. A child experiencing normal growth relative to their age group is likely to

be in good health, meanwhile, a child experiencing abnormal growth may

have an underlying disease or hormonal problem, for example. Early

identification of a growth problem should be made known to a medical

professional. The earlier the detection, the more effective treatment can be for

a child to assist with healthy development.
