LESSON PLAN IN ENERGY TRANSFER IN THE ECOSYSTEM

Content: Transfer of Energy in Trophic Levels

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the one-way flow of energy
and the cycling of materials ini an ecosystem
Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to make a poster comparing food choices
based on the trophic levels
Topic/Title: Energy Transfer in the Ecosystem
Grade Level: Grade 8
Time Allotment: 2 hours
Learning Competency: The learners shall be able to: explain the concept of a species (S8LT-
IVg-19); classify organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system
(S8LT-IVh-20)

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:

a. Explain how energy is transferred in an ecosystem;
b. Create a food web using given set of organisms; and
c. Appreciate the importance of the concept of energy transfer in the
ecosystem to their food choices.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Lesson: Energy Transfer in the Ecosystem

B. References: Science Learner’s Module Grade 8
Worktext in Science and Technology Science Links 8
C. Materials:
a. Activity sheets
b. Pictures of living organisms
D. Concepts:
a. Energy e
b. Taxonomy is a branch of science that deals with the
systematic classification of living things
c. The modern classification system was developed by the
swedish scientist Carolus Linnaeus in the mid 1700’s. As
linnaeus created his method of classification, he considered
many things like outside appearance, internal organs, and how
body systems worked.
d. Living organisms are classified by their domain, kingdom,
phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
E. Skills: Logical Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, Reasoning Skills,
Critical Thinking Skills, Socializing Skills, Non-Verbal Ability
F. Values Integration: Teamwork, Camaraderie, Scientific Inquiry.

III. Procedure

LEARNING TASK
ELICIT  Review the students about what is energy, ecosystem, symbiosis,
biotic and abiotic components.
ENGAGE  The students
 The teacher will present what is taxonomy and who is Carolus
Linnaeus
EXPLORE  The teacher will present pictures of organisms
 The students will fill out a table by writing the names of the organisms
in their local dialects or any other languages they know.
 Teacher raises motive question:
EXPLAIN
o What is now the importance of taxonomy?
 The students will present insights about the importance of taxonomy
in classifying and naming organisms.
 As continuation, the teacher will post a picture of a prokaryote and a
eukaryote.
 The students will identify the differences between the two.
 The teacher presents the different kingdoms, phyla, classes, orders,
families, genera and species.
 The students will give examples of organisms that fall under the
classifications.
ELABORATE  The class brainstorms and discusses what a species is
 The students will answer an activity about classifying an organism using
the hierarchical taxonomic system.
 The students will answer an activity about how to name an organism
using binomial nomenclature.
 The teacher presents an inspirational video about saving the
endangered species.
EXTEND  The students are tasked to create an artistic output about endangered
species like collage, poster, poem, etc.
 The students, one-by-one will present their works in front of the class.
 The students answer a 10-item quiz.
 Their output on endangered species will be graded with the following
criteria:
EVALUATE  Content – 40%
 Creativity – 30%
 Actual Presentation – 20%
 Punctuality – 10%
