Standard Specification No 147 c

Refrigerant Charging Hose

1.0 Introduction

The purpose of this standard specification is to provide details of the approved refrigerant
charging hose, which is approved for ammonia. This hose has been chosen over
cheaper alternatives due to its compatibility with ammonia and its robust construction. It
will withstand low temperatures and has a proven track record in ammonia applications.
The hose can be used for pressure testing, charging refrigerant and as a vacuum pump
connecting hose.

2.0 Charging Hose Details

The type of charging hose to be used is the ½” NB Hydraline FX AS, SS anti-static, black
PTFE tube with 304 stainless steel braid c/w ½” BSPP female stainless steel unions both
ends and stainless steel swaged ends. This is a very flexible braided PTFE lined hose
that can easily be rolled up to go into the back of a van. A permanent stainless steel ring
will be fitted to each hose. The ring will be marked, “ammonia charging hose, maximum
working pressure 56 Bar” stamped with the date of manufacture. A pressure test
certificate will be supplied with each hose. The branch responsible for purchasing the
hose shall keep the certificate on file.

4.0 Applications

The hose is selected primarily as a safe product to charge ammonia into refrigeration
plant. It can be used to charge HFC refrigerants, and to charge OFN when pressure
testing. It can be used as a vacuum pump connecting hose and as a temporary
refrigerant transfer line. The hose must never be exposed to pressures above its rated
allowable pressure. The charging hose should be cleaned (purged or evacuated) before
changing from one fluid to another. Note that the allowable pressure means that this
hose will not be suitable for all carbon dioxide system pressure testing. Further it shall
not be used for charging CO2 from cylinders at ambient temperature as the saturated
pressure could be as high as 88 Bar(G) at 40°C.
