Cashless transport solution for Mr Mark

The objective of this solution is to enable vehicle and fleet owners, drivers, conductors, and passengers,
use public transport without having cash in hand through the means of convenient cards, and therefore
eliminate some of the inconveniences that carrying cash causes

Hamwe East Africa Limited will design, supply, and maintain the system for Mr Mark, using the various
competencies on our team.

Ecosystem
The current transport ecosystem in Uganda is one that is ruled by cash transactions. Even mobile money
has not made much inroads into commuter vehicles. The proposed system seeks to introduce convenience
at the expense of cash transactions so as to enable smooth change of customer behavior.

Infrastructure
The players in the system are the Drivers, Conductors, Passengers, and Fleet Owners.

The system will consist mainly of cards, which will be linked to cash and mobile money accounts, and card
readers. The transactions in the system will be from Cash to Credit, Mobile Money to Credit, HamwePay
to Credit. This credit is the main medium of exchange in the system.

The credit can be converted back to cash, or mobile money, through authorized agents and dealers, and
by interacting with the HamwePay platform.

The hardware consists of card readers, stationed in the cars, along with POS terminals with selected
agents. Cards can be bought from an authorized dealer, and credit is topped up through cash at the dealer,
or via Mobile Money, which will be plugged in to HamwePay.

The POS terminals will conduct transactions via USSD.

Drivers/Conductors and Fleet Owners will be registered in the system. This will enable credit to their
accounts, and provide the ability to send money to their linked mobile money wallet.

User Journeys
1. Passenger
The prospective passenger buys a card, and then proceeds to load it with transport credit. Upon
entry into a taxi, or other vehicle, the passenger swipes the card on the reader in order to establish
the beginning point of the journey. On reaching the destination, the passenger swipes once again,
and the credit is automatically transferred to the Driver/Fleet Owner Account.
In the case where no beginning point was established, the driver can enter the number of stages
that the customer has passed, and the credit will be automatically transferred to the Driver
account.
This is a complete transaction cycle.

2. Driver
The Driver/Conductor simply puts the card reader in a convenient place for the passengers to
swipe their cards at the beginning, or end of their journey. If the passenger forgot to swipe at the
beginning of the journey, they can follow commands and intervene via USSD on the reader, in
order to establish the fare of te passenger, then the credit is topped up on their account, and the
transaction ended.
3. Fleet Owner
The fleet owner will get a web-based dashboard that will show the routes convered, fare
collected, and other information they may find useful.

Potential Costs of setting up the system

1. Purchase and Printing of Cards, along with branding
2. Purchase of card readers, depending on which type of card is used (magnetic, NFC, or QR Code)
3. Recruiting of vehicle owners, and installation of card reading equipment
4. Software development, and maintenance.
