Chapter 1

Background of the problem

With the rise of internet media, the access of information has never been easier

but with that comes with problems as well such as Cyber Bullying, Data Breaches, and in

particular research, Internet Piracy.

The spread of piracy is unbound. Children in internet cafes’ that plays video games, the

content creators that has the software that gives them access to do their passion whether it be

Photo editing, video editing or to create music, are questionable because one cannot determine if

a digital item (ex: video games, movies, eBooks, software) was bought legitimately or was

downloaded over the internet. Moreover, the people in our locality either lack the finance or does

not have the resolve to buy a digital product.

In one, article by PhilStar Entertainment “Fight vs. illegal downloading continue” in

2014. The Philippines Association of Recording Industry (PARI) scored a win against piracy

when it shut down Kickass Torrents (KAT.ph), A torrent site that host copyrighted materials to be

download illegally but after a few weeks, the illegal hosting site rise back from the dead and used

another domain name.

“As of 2014, there were no provision in the anti-piracy law that includes illegal

downloading as a violation”
Significance of the Study

The Significance of the Study is to inform the students and the reader a perception on the

phenomenon of internet piracy. It is also significant to the future researchers of this similar topic

for which not many research like this has risen in today’s generation

Statement of the problem

This study aims to address the following:

1.) What are the perception of De La Salle John Bosco College students regarding

internet piracy?
2.) What are the circumstances why students tend to resort in internet piracy?
3.) Are the students aware of what internet piracy is and its cost once caught?
4.) Do students rely on internet piracy to obtain digital product they desire?

Purpose of the study

The purpose of this study is to understand the perception of De La Salle John Bosco

College students towards internet piracy; to evaluate the factors why students resort in internet

piracy; conclude the percentage of students that are aware on internet piracy and the students that

rely on internet piracy

Research Method

In order to conclude the perception of internet piracy in De La Salle John Bosco College,

a survey questionnaire will be carry out to selected people who will represent the population

from 7th to 12th grade students, It will be conducted from their sections which the participant(s)

can answer the given questions clearly. Furthermore, the participants will receive certain

questions that would establish their experience with internet piracy to aid shaping the perception

of internet piracy in De La Salle John Bosco College

Limitation

Although the established limitation of this research is within the reach of De La Salle

John Bosco College, It is still quite a huge population and another limit to that is the sample data

we the researchers will still discuss. Another limitation of this research is our sample size only

applies to the 7th to 12th grade students for the reason that 7 th grade students and above are more

mature, self-aware and knowledgeable about their activities on the internet. Since internet piracy

has been a debatable issue and has been a widely accept by many, our assumption is that many

people practice piracy and our criteria is that one must have a personal computer and access to

the internet to conclude such claims.

Another limitation to our study is the criteria for the participants who will represent the

population. The criteria consist only of two, the participants must have a personal computer (PC)

and access to the internet. Even though piracy can be, accomplish by other means such as mobile

devices, personal computers are ubiquitous and gives the user ease of control over to what he/she

decided and the Internet offers opportunity for the user to explore and frankly pirate a digital

product, which he/she cannot acquire.

We also limit our scope and seclude Administration Issues since copyright is a cluster of

right, various rights of the owner such as right of reproduction and communication, etc., may be

infringe. It becomes very difficult to ascertain the authority – should it be determined with

reference to where the material originated, or where it went along the way or where it end up

being displayed, stored or printed. Moreover, even in cases where the infringement can be

traced, it becomes very difficult to hold a person accountable for infringement because of the

absence of cross border laws or because it is not financially viable. As a result, the infringer gets

off and is one of the arguments why such offences are steadily increasing. The subject of rights
and liability differs from one country and the other and comparing the effectiveness of the

implementations and work will make our research more difficult

Summary

In this research study, we have established the foundation of the objectives and resources

we use and will use such as the limited reach of this study; the methodology that will be used

when collecting data from interviewees; and the quick background of what internet piracy is. All

of the aforementioned subjects are to tackle about the perception towards internet piracy in De

La Salle John Bosco College among 7th to 12th Grade Students

Conceptual Framework

This study attempts to better understand why consumers in this case students are resorting to
internet piracy.

Benefit Sacrifice

Perceived
Usefulness Technicality
Perceived
Enjoyment Perceived Fee

Perceived value

Ethical self-efficacy for

online piracy

Tendency to resort to
internet piracy

Fig 1. Research Model

The conceptual framework we used as shown in Figure 1. is an adaptation from “What Drives
purchasing intention in the context of online content services? The moderating role of ethical
self-efficacy for online piracy” (Yi-Shun Wang, 2013: Ching-Hsuan Yeh, 2013; Yi-Wen Liao,
2013). This research model suggests that perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment,
technicality, and perceived fee all have a relationship with perceived value, and that ESOP
(ethical self-efficacy for online piracy) has a moderating effect on the relationship between
perceived value and an individuals’ tendency to resort to internet piracy.
