The Aenid by Vergil

Character:
*Aeneas-The Protagonist of the Aenid,he is one of the great epic heroes.One of
the ancestors of Emperor Augustus,Aeneas is one of the only survivors of the
Trojan War.
*Acestes-King of the Sicilian city of Drepanum,Ancestes offersAeneas and his men
a safe harbor when they are driven ashore by a raging storm.
*Achaemenides-A Geek warrior who was accidentally abandoned by his
shipmates in Sicily when they fled the one-eyed Cyclops Polyphemus.
*Achates-One of Aeneas most faitful and trusted men,Achates remains by his side
throughout the tale.
*Aeolus-The good of the winds,Aeolus raises the waves in an attempt to capsize
Aeneas ships,thereby angering Neptune,god of the sea.
*Allecto-One of the Furies,Allecto is sent by Juno to start the war between the
Latins and the Trojans.
*Amata-The wife of Latinus and the Queen of Laurentum,where Aeneas and his
crew seek their destiny,Amata is Strongly opposed to the marriage between
Aeneas an.
*Andromache-Quee of Buthrotum,Andromache is a Trojan and the widow of the
great Hector.
*Anchises-Aeneas father,for whom Aeneas has a deep love and resoect.
*Anna-Dido’s sister,she has good intentions,but unwittingly sets into motion a
series of events with disastrous consequences.
*Apollo-The god of the sun,He comes to Aeneas’s aid when he and his mens stop
in delos.
Summary:
-After the destruction of Troy prince Aeneas leads a small band of survivors in
search of a new home Itally.Unfortunately,as they sail on their way,they get
spotted by the goddess Juno.Juno hates thhe Trojans because an old grudge,and
because they are destined to become the Roman’s,who will destroy Cartage,her
favorate city.Conspring with the god of the winds,Juno whips up a storm,forcing
Trojans to take refuge in you guessed it Carthage.

Plot:
-Aeneas tells of the sack of Troy that ended the Trojan War after ten years of
Greek siege. In the final campaign,the Trojans were tricked when they accepted
into their city walls a wooden horse that,unbeknownst to them,harbored several
Greek soldiers in its hollow belly.He tells how he escaped the burning city with his
father,Anchises;his son Ascanius;and the heart gogs that represent their fallen
city.Assured by the gods that a glorious future awaited him in Itally,he set sail
with a fleet containing the surviving citezens of Troy.

Setting:
-After setting out from the Troy,in modern Turkey,Aeneas fleet ricochets like
a pinball off the major landmarks of the Ancient Mediteranean:Trace,the
Greekislands,Crete,Espirus,Sicily,North Africa,and flnally Itally.Its important to
remember,though that the time in which Aeneas adventures takes place isn’t just
ancient from our perspective,it was also way,way lost in the mists of time for
Vergil.

Resolotion:
-In reading the aenid,one thing that you might want to think about is wether
Vergil means that,for all these details to be taken seriously,or does he want the
reader to realize that he has creating a fictional account of Rome’s origin?How
might your answer to this question influence your interpretation of the poem
overall?s
