 The word “Play” comes from the Latin
word “Ludus” which means recreation or

abandoned, and European became increasingly
more agricultural.
Comedia Dell’Arte – Italy’s Contribution
In Italy, a unique form of theatre was
created for the common people – “Comedia
dell’Arte”
ELIZABETHAN THEATRE
William Shakespeare – is the most notorious
playwright in the history of theatre.
THE REPUBLIC AND THE RESTORATION
In 1642, the English Parliament closed all the
theatres in England.
18TH CENTURY THEATRE
