Objective: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to use simple past tense verbs to
write a scary story in groups.
Materials: Review visuals, verb cards (one set per group), scary story pictures,
scary story cloze exercise (one for each pair), paper, scary story prompt
pictures
Ask individual Ss to share their sentences with the class. (To begin with, Richard
took a shower. Next, he spoke (to/with his boss, on the phone, etc). After that, he
finished a book. Finally, he gave money (to his friend, etc))
Tell Ss, “Now we’re going to read a ghost story.” Use the scary story pictures to lead
a class discussion about the story. Ask Ss questions about the pictures: What’s
happening? Who is this? What are they doing? Where are they going? What do you
think happened to the old man? Who do you think lives in the ger? Etc.
T should circulate and provide feedback. If Ss finish early, T can ask them to help
other pairs of students.
(Note: This exercise may take the rest of the class, in which case, the ‘After Reading’
part of the lesson can be homework)
KEY
It was late in the evening, and Bold was riding home. On the way, he met an
old man. The old man asked, “Can I ride one of your horses to the ger over there?
My daughter lives there, but I am very old and cannot walk.” Bold said yes, and the
old man got on one of the horses. They rode in silence.
When they got to the ger, Bold turned round. The old man wasn’t on the
horse. Bold looked for the hole man, but he couldn’t see him anywhere. He got off
his horse and went to the ger. A woman came out. Bold told her about the old man.
He was very frightened. The woman was very surprised.
She invited Bold into the ger and gave him some tea. Then she said, “You are
talking about my father, but he died six months ago. His grave is over there.” Bold
ran out of the ger and got back on his horse. He rode away as fast as possible.
