Advantages of Mother Tongue Education

• It helps the child value its culture and heritage, which contributes to a positive self-
concept.
Teaching mother tongue also caters the origin of the first language and it also helps
children love and own their culture.
• Language proficiency is an important variable for school success.
Pupils can learn well when they are taught using their first language thus results to
good academic performance.
• Strengthens the foundation for language learning in a broader sense.
• Allows for a smooth return to education in country of origin.
Love of the language, culture and the place of origin is developed in Mother Tongue
education because it does not only limit itself by just using the language as a medium of
instructions but it also digs deeper on the history and the origination of the language.
• Allows for better communication and a closer bond with family and friends in country
of origin.
This is a very obvious effect of using the mother-tongue. Connection among family
members and others is tightened since there will be no language barriers and each
individual can freely express their opinions. In this manner, there will be greater
understanding among each individual.

Disadvantages of Mother Tongue Education

1. Code-switching, or switching between languages, is an issue in MT

education.
2. Utility of languages. Minority languages need to be accorded functions in
political and social domains, used in standardized assessment, and made
visible in the community’s and the nation’s linguistic landscape.
3. Forced compliance with program. After initial MTB-MLE implementation,
some teachers who felt compelled to implement the program manifested a
form of silent resistance to it by designing lessons that deviated from MTB-
MLE principles
