Client-Server Network Topology using Cisco packet tracer

Name : SUYASH CHAMARTHY

Reg. No. : 17BLC1041
Faculty Name : JAYA VIGNESH T

Aim:

a. To set up Client-Server Network Topology using Cisco packet tracer

b. To Analyze the Network behavior in both Simulation Mode and Real Time Mode
c. To set up HTTP, DNS services and analyze the network behavior

Tool Required:

Cisco Packet Tracer

Theory:

CISCO PACKET TRACER:

Packet Tracer is a cross-platform visual simulation tool designed by Cisco Systems that allows users to
create network topologies and imitate modern computer networks. The software allows users to simulate
the configuration of Cisco routers and switches using a simulated command line interface. Packet Tracer
makes use of a drag and drop user interface, allowing users to add and remove simulated network devices
as they see fit.

Key Features:-
- Packet Tracer Workspaces:
Cisco Packet Tracer has two workspaces—logical and physical. The logical workspace allows user to
build logical network topologies by placing, connecting, and clustering virtual network devices. The
physical workspace pro-vides a graphical physical dimension of the logical network, giving a sense of
scale and placement in how network devices such as routers, switches, and hosts would look in a real
environment. The physical view also provides geographic representations of net-works, including
multiple cities, buildings, and wiring closets.
-Packet Tracer Modes:
Cisco Packet Tracer provides two operating modes to visualize the behavior of a network real time
mode and simulation mode. In real-time mode the network behaves as real devices do, with
immediate real-time response for all network activities. The real-time mode gives students a viable
alternative to real equipment and allows them to gain configuration practice before working with
real equipment. In simulation mode the user can see and control time intervals, the inner workings
of data transfer, and the propagation of data across a network. This helps students understand the
fundamental concepts behind network operations. A solid understanding of network fundamentals
can help accelerate
learning about related concepts.
Protocols:
Cisco Packet Tracer supports the following protocols:

Modular Devices: Graphical representations visually simulate hardware and offer the ability to insert
interface cards into modular routers and switches, which then become part of the simulation.
Multiuser Functionality: Cisco Packet Tracer is a network-capable application, with a multiuser peer-
to-peer mode that allows collaborative construction of virtual networks over a real network. The
multiuser feature enables exciting collaborative and competitive interactions, providing the option to
progress from individual to social learning and features opportunities for collaboration, competition,
remote instructor-student interactions, social networking, and gaming.
Tutorials:
Packet Tracer includes several basic step-by-step tutorials that familiarize users with the product
features and explain how to engage in simulations. Additional advanced tutorials are avail-able for
download from Academy Connection.
A help feature is available to familiarize users with the Cisco Packet Tracer interface, functions, and
features. The help area includes important notes and tips and provides annotated screen-shots to aid
understanding.

Activity Wizard:
The Activity Wizard allows users to author their own learning activities by setting up scenarios using
instructional text, and creating initial and final network topologies and pre-defined packets. The
Activity Wizard also includes grading and feedback capabilities
PROCEDURE:

< Write the detailed procedure for building a client server model using the Cisco Packet Tracer >
1. Once you launch the application ( CISCO PACKET TRACER) you should get an blank workspace
with various options and buttons on the bottom left corner and right side of the screen
2. On the bottom left corner we can the servers, i/o ports, devices, connection wires/ buses etc.
3. We can press on servers and we will find the options in the bottom middle portion which will
display servers, end devices, switches etc.
4. We can place the required elements in the workspace and access the cables section and
connect the cables between the network using the connections table given.
5. Once the connections are given you should be able watch the leds blink/ turn green. If it
does’nt turn green it means there went something wrong in the connections.

< Write detailed procedure for configuring each end devices>

1. To configure the end devices in the connection we can click on a specific device to get a pop
window. In this window we can configure the IP address, MAC address of the device.

2. After configuring the right IP addresses on the end devices, you will have to do the same on
the routers and switches also, using the address table. But this time in a different way
because there's no desktop platform on the routers and switches.

3. Click on the device and open the Command Line Interface (CLI) and then type in the right
commands to configure the right addresses for the router using the addressing table.

4. Use a console cable from an end device and connect it to the device you wish to configure
and access the terminal platform on the end device and it will take you to the device's
5. Command Line Interface and then you type in the commands in other to configure the right
addresses.
Write the procedure for checking connections between all devices using “ping” command

1. After configuring the IP addresses, you will need to configure the default gateway also. The
reason for this is so the end devices would know what network they are operating on. You
can find the default gateway either in the addressing table (if given) or in the network
topology.
2. After configuring the addresses, you will have to test connectivity by opening a command
prompt window on the end devices and try pinging the address which the network operates
on. If it gives you a reply, it means your network was configured correctly.
< Write the procedure for simulating the network by selecting simulation mode and observe the
packet trace in the network designed>

1. In cisco packet tracer mode, It consists of two modes, real time and simulation modes. Select
the simulation tab and add the event in the list.
2. If you need to see the working using only ICMP protocol, then go to edit filters and add only
ICMP Protocol.

< Write the procedure for simulating the network by selecting real time mode and observe the
packet trace in the network designed>
1. You can delete the network packet tracing and the process by clicking the delete in the real
time mode.
2. Similarly, you can enable the packet tracing mode using the real time mode.
< Write the procedure for configuring the HTTP & DNS Services in Server and real time mode
simulation>

1. Enter into the configuration tab of both the end devices. Select the IP config and add its IP
address. The submask will be automatically enter and give gateway as the IP address of the
server.

2. Enter into the configuration tab of the server and On the HTTP tab.

3. Now enter into the end device and click the web browser and search the IP address of the
server. Then the web page will be obtained.

Domain
INFERENCES & RESULT

What do you infer / learn from the experiment?

In this experiment we see how the data is transferred from server to other devices for various
protocols. We observe step by step procedure on how the package is sent and accepted or rejected
by the end devices.
We learn how to configure the systems and launch a specific web site using basic servers.
We get a brief idea on how to set the IP address and how it will be used to connect to other devices.
