DUE FOR SUBMISSION: 5/08/2019 Faculty: Dr.N.Senthil Kumar

1. A three phase load draws 250 kW at a power factor of 0.707 lagging from a 440-V line.
In parallel with this load is a three phase capacitor bank which draws 60 kVA. Find the
total current and resultant power factor.

2. A 3phase 15 HP motor operating at 0.8 p.f. lagging with 90% efficiency is supplied from
a 3 phase 440V line having an impedance of 0.3+j1.0 . Draw the single phase
equivalent circuit for the motor and its connection to the supply. Show the p.u values of
the line impedance and the voltage at the motor terminals on a base of 20 kVA 440 V.
Using p.u values, find the supply voltage in p.u. and the actual value of the supply in
volts.

3. The terminal voltage of a star connected load consisting of three equal impedances of
2030is 4.4 kV line to line. The impedance of each of the three lines connecting the
load to a bus at a substation is ZL = 1.4 75. Find the line to line voltage at the
substation bus.

4. Evaluate the following expressions in polar form: a-1, 1-a2+a,a2+a+j,ja+a2.

5. (i)Determine the current from a three-phase 440-V line by a three-phasen15 hp motor

operating at full load, 90% efficiency, and 80% power factor lagging. Find the values of
P and Q drawn from the line.
(ii) If the impedance of each of the three lines connecting the motor to a bus is 0.3 +j1.0
, find the line to line voltage at the bus which supplies 440V at the motor.

6. A balanced  connected load consisting of pure resistances of 15 per phase is in

parallel with a balanced load having phase impedance of 8 + j6. Identical impedances
of 2 + j5 are in each of the three lines connecting the combined loads to a 110 V three

combined load.
7. State the advantages of per phase analysis and per unit calculations in power system

8. Draw an impedance diagram for the electric power system shown .All the impedances are

Generator G1 circuit

Generator 2: 30 MVA, 18kV,Xd˝=0.20 per unit
Generator 3: 30 MVA, 20kV,Xd˝=0.20 per unit
Transformer T1: 25MVA, 220Kv Y/13.8 kV,X=10%
Transformer T2: Single phase units each rated 10 MVA, 127 Y /18 kV, X=10%
Transformer T3: 35MVA, 220Y/22YkV,X=10%.

11.A single phase transformer is rated 110/440 V, 2.5 kVA. Leakage reactance measured from
the LV side is 0.06. Determine leakage reactance in per unit both from the LV side. Prove that
the per unit of the transformer reactance remains the same when referred from the HV side.

12. Three parts of a single phase electric systems are designated A, B and C are connected to
each other through transformers. The transformers are rated as A-B 10 MVA, 13.8/138 kV,
X=10% and B-C 10 MVA 138/69kV, X=8%. If the base in circuit B is chosen as 10 MVA, 138
kV, Find the per unit impedance of the 300 resistive load in a circuit C referred to circuits C, B
and A.Draw the impedance diagram neglecting the magnetizing current, transformer resistance
and line impedance.

13.A 3 transformer is rated 400 MVA, 220 Y/ 22  kV. The Y equivalent reactance measured
on the LV side of the transformer is 0.121 . Determine the per unit reactance of the transformer
and the value to be used to represent this transformer in a system whose base on the HV side of
the transformer is 100 MVA, 230 kV.
