Cap. 1: Do Método ao Pós-método: a evolução no ensino de línguas

EXERCISE

The chapter is about the different language teaching methods applied along the years. They
brought many benefits, but none of them was perfect, that is, they presented some sort of
weaknesses. Make a table relating the language teaching methods listed in the chapter and their
problems.

Language Teaching Methods Problem(s)

Grammar translation However this method may increase the student’s vocabulary, it is too
restrict to the paper. Therefore, this method does not spend time with
oral production of language, ignoring pronounce teaching. Commented [F1]: pronunciation

Direct method The classes were restrict to the use of oral language and only it, soCommented [F2]: REMOVE
speak in your first language was “forbidden”. This method is the
opposite of Grammar translation, because in this one grammar and
writing are not important. In this way, speak in the other language wasCommented [F3]: REMOVE
Commented [F4]: speaking
more important than speak correctly.
Commented [F5]: speaking
Reading approach As the other methods so far, this one focus only in one skill andCommented [F6]: … focuses only on one skill (reading)
ignores the others.
Audiolingual method In this method, the students should learn how the natives really speak
and the learners did not have to care about grammar, because
sometimes the natives did not speak following the grammar’s rules.Commented [F7]: grammar rules
They should listen to audios e repeat coping the pronounce. But asCommented [F8]: copying the pronunciation
they learn only what they listen, there will be some structures that they
would not know.
Sugestologia
In this method, the classroom act upon the learning, so the space has to

be comfortable for the students. This is what “Sugestologia” is: a

complicated method to be used in school classes. It is more likely to be

used in private courses.

Curran method
This method can be used only in small classes, because the teacher has

to give assistance to all students and they all have to speak.

Silent method Commented [F9]: THIS IS ONE IS ABOUT THE STUDENTS
REMAINING SILENT DURING A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, ONLY
I did not understand this one. LISTENING TO THE TEACHER AND THE RECORDINGS, BECAUSE IT
WAS BELIEVED THE BEST WAY TO LEARN IS BY HEARING THE
Asher method LANGUAGE FIRST AND THEY WILL NATURALLY DEVELOP THE
KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANGUAGE AND THE OTHER SKILLS.
This method is repetitive and limited. Also becomes difficult to be

used in classes with many students.

Natural approach
It is a slow way to learn a second language, because the student has to

respond to an input. The teacher has little participation in this method.

Communicative approach This theory has difficult in define the semantic categories, so is hard toCommented [F10]: difficulties to
distinguish different meanings possible for a word. Commented [F11]: possible meanings for words and
expressions in different contexts.

GOOD JOB, NICE UNDERSTANDING OF THE LEARNING AND TEACHING

APPROACHES.
