Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 3D Animation class. This will be an exciting and challenging year. MAYA is a very
robust and complicated, state of the art software which is used in the movie industry today. This class will
introduce the basics of this software, so that the students can create a simple animated movie as a final project.
While this class will spend most of its time leaning how to use this software, we will also focus on the history
of animation, character development, story development and the study of motion as God created it. Using the
software and the computer is obviously irreplaceable to the production of 3D animation; however, learning
how to animate requires creativity and an eye for motion and emotion. Only in studying God’s creation can we
begin to create (however simplistic) whatever our own minds can imagine.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me.

In His Service,

Nancy Franklin

Course Description: The students will learn how to create 3D-animation using MAYA. They will learn how
to create objects and characters in as well as how to animate them, and create an environment. The first
semester will be devoted to learning the skills needed to create an animation project. During the second
semester, students will create various animations as well as learning some special effects.

Homework: There will be no homework assigned for this class. During projects a strict timeline must be
followed to ensure the completion of the project. If students fall behind in the timeline they may need to
arrange to come to the lab outside of class time to catch up. When a student is ready to render a project he/she
will need to come to the lab, for a few minutes, after school to start the process so the computer can be
working overnight.

Discipline: This class will follow the discipline policies outlined in the student planner.

Grading: 25% = Attitude and Effort

75% = Assignments and projects

Supplies: Students will need a folder for handouts; this will be kept in the classroom.
