EDUC 5324: INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY INTO EDUCATION

Name: ALI IHSAN ERDAS Date: 08.27.2019

Topic Selected: Traditionally, distance education courses lack face-to-face

interaction. What are the consequences of lack of interaction in distance
education? What can be done to increase interaction in distance education (online
courses) so that same type of learning can occur with face-to-face learning?

1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.
 You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.
 You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a
common theme or issue.
 You don't need to critique your sources
 You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)
 You need to provide background information such as history and
definitions
Brief Literature Review:
Development of technology along with widespread use of internet provides
many advantages in education field and one of them is distance learning.
Distance learning can be briefly described as an act of learning in a way that
students and the teachers don’t share the same environment. Distance learning
removes some limitations like time and space and makes the learning process
more convenient for students.
Technology integration is using technological items in the classroom to
engage students more such as smart boards, tablets, etc. Online training
programs are more convenient in many aspects for both the students and the
teachers. Today e-learning programs are seen as an alternative option for many
students. The main reason for this understanding is the direct communication
gap between the students and the online instructor. However, studying online
doesn't have to mean being isolated behind a computer screen – there are plenty
of ways to connect with your course-mates and tutors. Communication plays an
important role in the learning process. It enables the sharing of information,
thoughts and ideas which contribute to learning. Communication actually creates
opportunities for learning to take place.
Distance students can use online forums as a chance to meet their peers
socially, but it can be difficult to replicate real life interactions. Forums and social
networks are there to help connect students with their peers, but it is important to
know that as a distance-learning student you still have access to university
support too.
Richard Reece, associate vice-president for teaching, learning and
students at the University of Manchester, says "Academically, support from other
learners is as important on campus as it is off campus. We encourage students
who are on campus to form peer-assisted study schemes. We do the same for
distance learning students as well."
Online instruction can reduce classroom costs for colleges and
