QUILT BY Lisa DeBee Schiller MACHINE QUILTED BY Sandra Soni.

Lisa DeBee Schiller began quilting twenty-five years ago. She used quilting
as a way to make new friends when her family began moving every few
years. Designing blocks for classes led to starting her own pattern company,
Village Classics. Now that her daughters are grown, and the youngest has
flown the coop, she’s getting back into designing and creating.

Cutting Parallelograms
Use this easy method to quickly cut parallelograms for Fairfield Blue on page 24.

1. Cut strip width required for your project. (For Fairfield Blue, cut strips 6½" wide.)
2. Using ruler, trim end of strip at 45° angle from lower right to upper left (Photo A).
3. Position desired line of ruler on angled edge. (For Fairfield Blue use 67⁄8" line.)
Cut along edge of ruler to make 1 parallelogram (Photo B).
4. Continue in this manner to cut desired number of parallelograms (Photo C).
5. Cut reverse parallelograms in the same manner, cutting from lower left to upper
right (Photo D).

Quick Triangle Squares

Use this quick method to make the triangle-squares for Pick-Up Sticks
on page 54. The Fons & Porter Quarter Inch Seam Marker offers a
neat way to mark accurate sewing lines for this method.

A B

1. From each of 2 fabrics, cut 1 square 7⁄8" larger than the desired finished size of
the triangle-square. For example, to make a triangle-square that will finish 2¼",
as in the Pick-Up Sticks quilt on page 54, cut 31⁄8" squares.
2. On wrong side of lighter square, place the Quarter Inch Seam Marker
diagonally across the square, with the yellow center line positioned exactly at
opposite corners. Mark stitching lines along both sides of the Quarter Inch
Seam Marker (Photo A).
3. Place light square atop darker square, right sides facing; stitch along both
marked sewing lines.
4. Cut between rows of stitching to make 2 triangle-squares (Photo B).
NOTE: If not using the Fons & Porter Quarter Inch Seam Marker, cut 31⁄8" brown
and light tan print squares in half diagonally to make half-square triangles.
Join 1 brown print triangle and 1 light print triangle to make a triangle-square.

QUILT BY Diane Tomlinson.

Diane Tomlinson, Assistant Editor of Love of Quilting, was so engrossed

in her New York Beauty blocks, she lost track of time as she stitched—
a true a labor of love that is worth every minute. Diane enjoys
designing quilts on her computer, changing blocks and colors until
she has a pattern she loves. She likes to make intricate quilts with lots
of small pieces, and has already designed her next three quilts.

Girls Day
Girls Day is the ancient Japanese custom of displaying Hina dolls, wishing girls healthy
growth and happiness. It is believed that any doll display should be taken down soon
after the festival day of March 3—otherwise girls might have to wait to get married.

Variable Star
in Garden Maze
The setting for this great quilt from the International Quilt Study Center &
Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska only looks complicated. It’s made from three
different blocks which, when combined, give it a woven look.

QUILT FROM THE COLLECTION OF International

84 Fons R Porter’s Love of Quilting September/October 2011 www.FonsandPorter.com

FROM THE CURATOR
Carolyn Ducey, Curator of Collections at the International
Quilt Study Center & Museum, describes this early
Variable Star in Garden Maze (93¼"× 90½") as extremely
rare, unwashed, and in pristine condition. The hand
pieced circa 1820 quilt is by an unknown maker, probably
from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, about thirty miles
northwest of Philadelphia. It displays very little quilting
and probably has wool batting. A muslin patch on the
back reads “Given to Carrie L. Hatch by Grandmother
Hurlbert in 1871.”
Ruth Finley, in her 1929 book Old Patchwork Quilts and
The Women Who Made Them, calls the Variable Star the
foundation of most nine-patch star blocks, and declares
that the Garden Maze set was exceedingly popular in the
early nineteenth century. A number of characteristics in
this quilt are typical of some early quilts, including the use
of large expanses of fabric, as well as the overall layout
and design.
“The rich black fabric used in the stars and hexagonal
pieces is a 1780s French block print with penciled leaves,”
says Ms. Ducey. “Notice the blue dyes overlapping the
leaves’ outlines.” Direct application of indigo dye, known
as pencil blue because it was most often applied by pencil
or brush, was developed in England in the eighteenth
century and used to achieve dark blue hues well into the
nineteenth century. An arsenic compound delayed the
oxidation of the indigo long enough to paint the dye onto
fabric. The beige calico is probably an early roller print.
Brown and blue floral striped chintz setting triangles give
the quilt visual energy.
