DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

SECOND QUARTER
SY 2018-2019

I. Learning Competency and Objectives

 Recognize the general classes and uses of organic compounds; (S9MT-IIh-18)

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

a) Recognize the uses of common organic compounds

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Organic Compounds
B. Materials: pentel pen, manila paper, pictures of gasoline, acetone, kerosene,
acetic acid, LPG & ethanol, Science 9 Learner’s Material
C. Reference: Learner’s Material pages 131- 132

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Ask a student to lead the prayer
2. Greetings
3. Check the attendance
4. Monitoring of classroom cleanliness

B. Review
Teacher

In the previous module, you have learned how non- metals make chemical
bonds by sharing electrons from their outer shells to attain stable electronic
configurations. This is also the process by which every carbon compound or
organic compound is formed. In this module, the lessons will be about the uses
and properties of common organic compounds like hydrocarbons, aldehydes and
ketones, carboxylic acids and alcohols.

C. Motivation

Show them pictures of the following products: gasoline, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl
alcohol, LPG, acetone, and acetic acid. These products are all composed of
organic compounds.

D. Lesson Proper

Let your students work in groups. Tell them to brainstorm about the uses of the
compounds listed in Table 1 on page 132. Using the format of the table on the
module, let the students write their outputs on a piece of manila paper. After the
given working time, ask the representatives from selected groups to present their
outputs in front of the class.

Answer guide questions 1 & 2 on page 132

Possible answer of the students

Q1.
Compounds Uses

Gasoline Fuel for vehicles

Kerosene Fuel for lamps (gasera) and portable cooking stove

(kusinilya)
Can be used to remove paints

LPG (liquefied Fuel for gas stove and cars

petroleum gas)

Ethanol Disinfectant; and uses as main ingredient in liquors

Acetone Used to remove nail polish

Acetic acid Used as component of vinegar (4% by volume)

Can be used to treat fungal infection

Q2. These common organic compounds are very important because they have
many uses at home and in the industry.

F. Generalization

Organic compounds are group of carbon- containing compounds. Organic

compounds contain carbon and hydrogen; other organic compounds are
combined with other elements namely oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur,
and halogens. Ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, acetic acid, acetone, and diesel
oil are just some of the many examples of useful organic compounds.
IV. Evaluation:

Give at least 5 examples of organic compounds and cite their uses.

V. Assignment:

Define the following:

1. Phase of matter
2. Viscosity
3. Volatility
4. Flammability
