ACTIVITY 2:

EUBACTERIA
COMMON FEATURES OF ALL
CELLS

Cellmembrane
Cytosol
Genetic material
Ribosomes
K. EUBACTERIA
General characteristics:
 Prokaryotic-absence of true nucleus
and absence of membrane bound
structures or organelles.

 Metabolically diverse
Photoautotrophs
Chemoautotrophs

Photoheterotrophs

Chemoheterotrophs
K. EUBACTERIA
 Unicellular form
 Cellular arrangement (for complexity)
Filamentous
•Colonial

 Motility
Non-motile

Motile – flagella, gliding movement,

axial filaments, and gas vesicles
K. EUBACTERIA
Various modes of reproduction
 Sexual:Conjugation
 Asexual: Binary fission
Fragmentation
K. EUBACTERIA
Significance:
 Photosynthetic (cyanobacteria)
 Decomposers (common bacteria)
 Nitrogen fixers (heterocystous
cyanobacteria)
 Pathogenic
K. ARCHAEBACTERIA
 Also known as ARCHAEA
 Thrive in extreme conditions (high temperature,
high salinity, anaerobic conditions..)
 Cell wall composition is not peptidoglycan but
pseudopeptidoglycan (due to the difference in
sugar component)
 Methanogens- anaerobic, produce methane from H2
and CO2
 Halophiles- require high salt concentration
 Thremoacidophiles- grow in hot (80-105˚C), acidic
environment like hot springs, geysers, submarine
volcanoes; sulfate as source of energy.
