STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the association between the level of political interest and the

academic performance in Politics and Governance subject of (selected) Grade 12 HUMSS

Students at Judge Feliciano Belmonte Sr. High School.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of Grade 12 HUMSS Students’ Interest in Politics?

a. Extremely Interested

b. Very Interested

c. Moderately Interested

d. Slightly Interested

e. Not Interested at all

2. What is the Grade 12 HUMSS Students’ Academic Performance (General Average in 1st

Semester) in the subject of Politics and Governance?

3. What is the relationship between the level of political interest and the academic

performance in Politics and Governance subject of Grade 12 HUMSS Students?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

Ha: There is a relationship between the Grade 12 HUMSS Students’ level of political interest

and their academic performance in the subject of Politics and Governance.

H0: There is no relationship between the Grade 12 HUMSS Students’ level of political interest

and their academic performance in the subject of Politics and Governance.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers firmly believe that this study will be beneficial to the following

stakeholders:
Department of Education. This study may provide useful information and

recommendations for them to effectively set forth projects or changes in the curriculum itself that

are necessary in enhancing the quality of education in the Philippines.

School Administrators. This may serve as an eye-opener for them to clearly know factors

such as political interest and academic performance that might affect the learning progress of the

students and to be able to establish possible projects or actions to be taken for further

improvements.

Teachers. This may purposefully discover things that affects the academic performance

of the students that they are not aware of so that, they will know when to apply necessary

changes or improvements on their teaching strategies.

Students. As the main beneficiaries of this study, this study may help them know

themselves even more, in a way that they will be able to distinguish what interests them the most

and how their interests correlate to their academic performance.

Future Researchers. The ideas and information that will be presented in this study may

serve as a reference data in conducting future studies as well as in testing the validity of other

related findings.

Scope and Delimitation

The main focus of this study is to determine the relationship between students’ level of

political interest and academic performance in Politics and Governance subject at Judge

Feliciano Belmonte Sr. High School, School Year 2019-2020. This study will be limited only to

the results of students’ level of political interest and its association with their academic

performance in Politics and Governance Subject.

The proponents will delimit the participants of this study to a total of fifty (50) students who will

be purposively selected from sections of HUMSS- Academic Track. This study will not include

students from other tracks/strands for they do not take the said subject. Furthernore, other

subjects or fields are also excluded for they do not give emphasis on political discussion which is

the prime focus of this study.
