Installation Representation
The EKOGRID™ technology can be installed almost anywhere. It’s very efficient to use in porous mineral environ
ments and is cost competitive in situations with deep contamination or contamination under built infrastructure.
EKOGRID™ in situ remediation has none of the negative factors related to mass transfer or the use of some
chemicals.

Why choose EKOGRID™
Because of the vast number of polluted sites requiring remediation, the high cost of cleaning, and because remedia
tion procedures themselves can be harmful to the environment, choosing the most effective, ecological and cost-
efficient cleaning technology and method makes a big difference on a global scale.

Choosing the optimal method

Once a site is found to be contaminated, many variables will guide the selection of the remediation methods: the con
taminants discovered, the physical and chemical qualities of the contaminated media, historical use of the site, the
materials used and produced on site to be excavated. These variables are not known in many cases.

While there is a wide range of techniques available for remediation, ranging between in-situ and ex-situ methods,
many factors not typically considered within contamination assessment limit the selection of available remediation
methods. Some of the most common hurdles for the more resource-intense remediation methods such as ex-situ
and mass-transfer are:

High and unpredictable cost of mass-transfer

Soil excavation, disposal and containment to landfill is a fast method that provides often undisputable results.
However, it comes with a high, and often unknown price tag due to the costs associated with physical excavation,
transportation to a landfill and transportation of backfill material to the site. Dumping polluted material to a landfill
is subject to high and rising admission fees and taxes. As the exact volume to be excavated is not known in many
cases, the costs of excavation and transport may prove manifold when compared to an in-situ alternative, such as
the EKOGRID™ Technology.
Disruptions on business, public service and infrastructure
Polluted soil or ground-water may be situated under a road or a railroad track, at an airport, active industrial
building or other type of civil infrastructure. This may result in many remediation methods like excavation being
practically impossible to apply because of physical limitations, or because they could create disruptions of traffic
or business operations. In such cases, modern in-situ technologies, such as EKOGRID™ present a value-adding
alternative method that can be applied without affecting surroundings.

Environmental protection regulations

Removing contaminated soil by excavation in protected areas can be limited by regulations in order to avoid
harm to surrounding health and environment. In such scenarios the EKOGRID™ technology presents one of the
safest alternatives due to its minimal installation requirements, low power demand and inherent operational
safety features.

Mass-transfer disturbs, creates noise and emissions

Environmental remediation should be aligned with the commonly-adopted objectives of lowering greenhouse
gas emissions and operating in a sustainable manner. Excavation and disposal produce material disturbance to
people, the environment and generates co2 emissions. As an example, remediation of a site with 10,000 m3 of
polluted soil produces roughly 16,000 tons of material which would require 400 truck loads to be transported
away and roughly equal amounts of truck loads back to the site with clean soil. Thanks to its easy installation, low
power consumption and its non-reliance on hazardous chemicals, EKOGRID™ results in negligible environmental
impacts when compared to traditional techniques.

Conclusions
Society has to move forward with soil and groundwater remediation procedures. EKOGRID™ in-situ remediation
presents a great alternative to increase ecological and economical efficiency of environmental remediation in
the near future.
