Kelvin Dushnisky
AngloGold Ashanti Company
Johannesburg, South Africa

Subject: Request to know about the mining practices in the Mponeng gold mine and to acquire
the Mponeng gold mine.

Dear Kelvin Dushnisky,

I am writing to request additional information about the Mponeng gold mine with an interest
concerning the practices of gold mining. As you know miners across the globe face a heap of
health problems such as chronic disease, birth defects, and cancer from their work conditions
Efforts to minimize these problems are in progress as we reach out to various companies to find
lasting and sustainable solutions. Our company uses recycled gold when creating jewelries
because we believe the use of recycled gold will save the environment from degradation and
reduce the activity of dirty gold mining in the United States. We are also looking for gold mines
with ethical practices of gold mining and AngloGold announced plans to divest its South African
assets, including the Mponeng gold mine in May 2019.
I am a representative of the Leber Jeweler Incorporation and our purpose is to preserve the
environment by standing firmly against conflict diamonds and gold, unfair labor practices, and
environmentally damaging mining. The concept of using 100% recycled precious metal was
relatively new in 1999 when our company started Earthwise Jewelry. Twenty years later,
approximately 50% of jewelers do not recycle their crafting resources and that is why the
recycled precious metal demands is declining, whereas, primary mined production increases as
well as jewelry demands.
Some resources say that the jewelry brands that claim buying recycled gold rings will ‘alleviate
the devastating environmental impacts of gold mining’ are simply not rooting their marketing
claims in the facts.
1. Why did AngloGold include the Mponeng gold mine in its divestment knowing that
Mponeng gold mine is the heart of AngloGold Company?
2. Would your company endorse the expansion of gold mines which directly affects the
environment?
3. What does your company do after miners have collected gold resources from the mines?
Recycled gold can create an infinite cycle and supply for gold since the refining process
improves the quality of gold and there are many ways to refine gold. Nevertheless, Leber Jeweler
Incorporation seeks to acquire the Mponeng gold mine for its resources in the future. Our miners
will practice good mining techniques and be ethical because the idea behind using recycled gold
enables the environment to recuperate. The devastating environmental effects of mining are just
one of the problems Leber Jeweler Incorporation avoid by using 100% recycled precious metal.
We need to support each other and stay united if we want to make a change. Using recycled gold
gives Leber Jewel Inc. the transparency to share success stories about profit without any
accusation of unethical practices especially gold mining practices for its products. I am
anticipating your input on these issues and looking forward to our successful partnership. I
would like to thank you for your time in advance.

Sincerely,
Ikechukwu Asiegbunam
