ANGGUK KULON PROGO

Angguk Dance is a traditional dance from Yogyakarta that is danced by several dancers dressed in
soldiers. This dance is called Angguk Dance because of the dancing movements that often nod head.
Angguk dance is one of the traditional dances that are popular in Yogyakarta, especially in Kulon Progo.
Angguk Dance is almost the same as Dolalak Dance from Purworejo, this equation looks some elements
such as costumes and presentation in the show. This may be due to its adjacent area, thus affecting its
artistic and cultural similarities. Although many similarities but this Angguk Dance has its own
characteristics, especially in the dance movement. Angguk Dance is divided into two types, namely

In the show, Angguk Dance is usually performed by 10 to 20 dancers. At first Angguk Dance is played by
male dancers. But along with its development, Angguk Dance is usually played by female dancers. In the
show, Angguk Dance is accompanied by traditional music accompaniment such as rebana, drum, drums,
keyboard, drums, tambourine and others. In addition to musical accompaniment, Angguk Dance is also
accompanied by rhyming chanting by the vocalists, which contains advice or advice about life. One of
the highlights of this Angguk Dance is when dancers experience "Ndadi" (possessed) at a certain stage.
In these circumstances the dancers possessed the subtle spirit and acted strangely, thus making the
show interesting to the audience. One other uniqueness of Angguk Dance is also visible from the
costumes used. In contrast to traditional dances from other Jogjakarta that mostly use Javanese clothes
or wajang clothes, in this Angguk Dance dancers use a costume similar to the clothing of soldiers of
antiquity. Costumes used in this Angguk Dance include long-sleeved shirt that is given a unique
patterned ornaments and shorts are also given a colorful decoration. On the head using a black hat that
is also decorated in colorful knick knacks. It also uses socks and scarves on the waist is red or yellow.
