How is the BPV 14-10 block used on Izh

motorcycles; how to repair it?
The appearance of the block is shown in Fig. 34, the diagram is
in fig. 35. The technical data of the device are as follows: maximum
direct current - 20 A, adjustable voltage at constant current from
2 to 10 A, supply voltage frequency 165 ... 800 Hz (1650 ... 8000
rpm) and temperature 25 ± 5 ° C - 13.4 ... 14.3 V.

Fig. 34. The appearance of the BPV 14-10 block

The block consists of a power rectifier assembled on diodes V10-

V15 connected to the phase windings of the generator (G) through
contacts X4, X5, X7; controlled rectifier on thyristors V5 and V7,
diodes V6, V8, V9 and resistors R9 and R11, included in the
excitation winding circuit of the generator OB through the contact
- X1.
Fig. 35. Block diagram BPV 14-10

To the load of the motorcycle Rн and battery B, the power

rectifier is connected through the ignition switch C and contacts +
X8 and —X2. The control lamp H is connected through —X2 and
X3. Transistors V16 and V17, a Zener diode V2, a diode V3, and
resistors R3 — R8 form a thyristor control circuit. Capacitor C1,
diode V1 and resistors R1 and R2 comprise a filter circuit. Diode V4
is designed to reduce the influence of the EMF of self-induction field
winding.

In case of any doubt in the operation of the unit, first of all, it is

necessary to check whether the electrical contact at the connection
points of the circuits is broken. Verification should be carried out
by this method.

With the position of the ignition switch 1, the engine stopped and
the unit turned off, make sure that the phases of the generator and
the field windings do not close to the housing. To do this, connect
a type A12-3 lamp between a wire suitable for the terminal + X8
of the unit, and alternately to the wires connected to the terminals
of the unit X4, X5, X7, - X1. The lamp should not burn.

To make sure that the generator is working properly, disconnect

the unit and short the two wires in the mating connector, suitable
for —X1 and —X2. When the engine is idle, the lamp * must be lit
continuously (voltage is about 8 V). If the picture is different - the
generator or wires matching it are faulty. If at this stage the check
showed that the generator and wires are in order, then the unit is
responsible for the malfunction. The factory recommendation sets
out the sequence of its inspection and repair as follows.
*
(The lamp needs to be connected between phases С1-С2, С1-С3, С2-С3. Anyone who
does not know the device and the principle of operation of the synchronous alternator, connect
the lamp as when checking for a short to ground, but this is not true. Note. Bulba Alexander. )

If the ignition lamp H does not light when the ignition is switched
on and the engine is off, then:

need to temporarily close the contacts —X1 with X3. If the lamp
is in good condition, but does not light, the excitation circuit of the
generator winding is faulty (winding interruption, brush hangs,
etc.). The lamp is on - turn off the ignition and continue the test;

temporarily close the control electrode of thyristor V5 with the

connection point of diodes V1 and resistors R1 and R2, turn on the
lock. If the lamp does not light, check the health of resistor
R1. With a healthy capacitor C1, replace the thyristor V5. The lamp
is on - turn off the ignition switch and continue the test;

temporarily close the collector with the emitter of transistor V17,

turn on the ignition switch. If the lamp does not light, replace the
V6 diode with a working resistor R8. The lamp is on - turn off the
ignition, continue the test;

temporarily disconnect the collector of transistor V16 from

resistors R6, R5 and turn on the ignition switch. If the lamp does
not light with working resistors R5, R6, R7 and diode V3 - replace
the transistor V17. The lamp is on - turn off the lock, continue the
test by connecting V16;

temporarily close the base with the emitter of the transistor V16,
turn on the ignition switch. If the lamp does not light, replace the
V16 transistor. The lamp is on - replace the Zener diode V2 with
serviceable resistors R3 and R4.
Keep in mind: after replacing the Zener diode V2 or
transistor V16, it is necessary to check the regulated voltage
at the terminals + X8 and - X2 of the unit with the engine
running at medium speed. Its value should be in the range
from 13.5 to 14.2 V at an ambient temperature of 25 ± 5 °
C. If the voltage is lower, increase R3 or decrease R2; if
higher, decrease R3 or increase R2.

If the lamps burn out, the battery is recharged due to an increase

in voltage (more than 14.2 V at 1650 ... 8000 rpm and the
temperature already indicated), then:

connect a voltmeter to the terminals + X8 and - X2 of the unit

and short-circuit the control electrode of the thyristor V5 to
terminal -X2 for the duration of the voltage measurement. If the
voltage has not decreased to the battery voltage (12 V), replace
the V5 thyristor with working diodes V4, V8, V9. After replacement,
repeat this test and, if the voltage has not decreased to 12 V,
replace the V7 thyristor. The voltage has dropped - go to the next
stage of the test;

connect a voltmeter to the terminals + X8 and - X2 of the unit

and close the collector - emitter section of the V16 transistor for
the duration of the voltage measurement. If the voltage does not
decrease to the battery voltage, replace the V17 transistor. If it has
decreased, replace the V16 transistor with serviceable resistors R3
and R4 and the Zener diode V2.

If there is no voltage in the electrical system with a working

generator, then:

disconnect the unit from the system and check the power diodes
V10 – V15 of the rectifier with a 3 ... 4 W pilot lamp as follows:

connect the terminal - X2 with the "minus" of the battery and

alternately connect the terminals X4, X5, X7 through the lamp to
the "plus" of the battery. The lamp should not light up. Change the
polarity of connecting the battery to the diodes, that is, connect the
terminal - X2 to the "plus" of the battery, and the terminals X4, X5,
X7 - alternately through the lamp with its "minus". The lamp should
light up. If it lights up in the first case and does not light up in the
second, one of the V14, V13 or V15 diodes corresponding to
terminals X4, X5 and X7 is out of order;

to check the three other diodes, connect the + X8 terminal with

the “plus” of the battery, and the terminals X4, X5, X7 with the
“minus” through the lamp; then vice versa: + X8 with a “minus”,
and X4, X5, X7 - with a “plus”. If the lamp lights up in the first case
and does not light up in the second, the diodes Vll, V10 or V12 are
faulty, respectively.

In the absence of radio components indicated in the diagram,

they can be replaced with others with suitable characteristics - for
this you need to look into the relevant directories.
