PAS Portfolio
ABB’s experience in automation of press lines dates back to 1973 when
Volvo automated the first line with Doppin feeders in Sweden. ABB
took over Volvo experience with its acquisition in 1998. The first robot
automated press line was installed in 1993.
Experience since 1973
The vast experience of close to 40 years in the field
has been integrated in all our products and stan-
dards, assuring proven, reliable, and cost effective
solutions to our customers. Today, more than 900
press lines have been automated worldwide by ABB,
with over 4000 Doppin feeders and 3000 Robots.
We pride ourselves on developing and delivering
innovative solutions that drive the success of
our customers. We offer a comprehensive and
differentiated portfolio of robotic solutions,
press improvements, function packages, and
products for the forming industries. We develop
our long term vision working in a globally con-
nected and collaborative team.
Products and solution
ABB offers automation solutions that follow the
market and technology drivers. They are based on
products, for example pre-tested modular solu-
tions. Our automation solutions are conceived for
new projects as well as existing press lines:
• Complete lines from Stack to Rack
• End-of-line including Quality Inspection
and Racking Systems
• Hot stamping solutions
• Robotic stacking for blanking lines
• Press Motors and Drives, including servo-
technology (DDC)
• Standard Package for automation of press
cells (StampPack)
Production cycle
In order to obtain substantial improvements in
press line productivity, we focus on every single
factor of the production cycle: robots, presses,
and its coordination along the whole line.
Products
ABB robots for press automation are in continuous
evolution to become faster, with specific emphasis
on reducing critical press occupation times.
The Press Automation robots portfolio includes
6-axis robots with specific enhancement of the key
axes involved in the part transfer, 7-axis robots to
maintain the part position while minimizing the
press occupation, and the Twin Robot, one single
controller with axes distributed in two manipula-
tors for a more efficient power distribution.
ABB offers two families of 7-axis robots, related
with the motion type of the 7th axis. The rotational
7th axis solution combines rotational movements
to maintain the part orientation between presses.
The linear 7th axis offers the additional advantage
of a compound linear acceleration while moving
in and out of the press.
Solutions
ABB has developed different configurations of the
main elements of a press line. Each one represents
a solution for most common costumer needs.
Cells are a solution for one press procedure like
destacking, loading, inter-press movement, un-
loading, and racking, usually composed by one
or two robots.
Lines are solutions focused on the whole process,
involving more than one press procedure; it’s a
“from stack to rack” concept.
Function packages
Stamp pack is a pre-engineered package of standard
products that are brought together, connected,
and tested in such a way that they deliver a plug
and produce solution.
Hot Stamping Twin Pack can be used for fast part
transfer and easy integration into the hot stamping
press, thanks to twin robots and StampWare.

an unprecedented flexibility for stamping processes.

Modular Structure StampApp software has a modular structure to facilitate cell

upgrades and the cell devices can be easily defined through the
standard Robot Installation Manager.

Carbon Fibre Tooling

Tooling ABB Innovation ABB has developed a completely new concept of tooling based
on carbon fibre. Carbon fibre’s highly rigid and lightweight
properties make it perfect for robot applications.

ABB’s Carbon Fibre tooling improves process performance due

to a dramatic reduction of deflection, vibrations and weight.

Additionally the new ABB design features a slimmed down gripper

(the height has been significantly reduced), which has a positive
impact on cycle times.

CF Tooling Family ABB’s CF Tooling family consists of two products: CF Boom

and CF Gondola Arm.
