-Abstract :
Edible vaccines hold great promise as a cost-effective, easy-to-store, fail-safe and
socioculturally readily acceptable vaccine delivery system, especially for the poor developing
countries. The process was first developed by Arntzen et al. EVs are developed to treat
malaria, measles, HIV, ETEC (Enterotoxigenic E.coli.) and anthrax. Biotechnology has
provided new strategies for edible vaccine design based on isolation of pathogenic gene, gene
editing and incorporation of gene into a vector (usually a plant species or microbe).Today, we
can introduce foreign genes into almost all food crops, and these genes are faithfully passed
on to future generations. Due to this type of researches, transgenic crops are being developed
with growing acceptance in population. But, edible vaccine has been facing major hurdles
(technical, regulatory, non-scientific) as most food proteins don’t trigger an immune
response. The type of material that would best serve as vehicle for edible vaccine is yet to be
determined. So, plant-based & microbiological edible vaccines will not be readily available
tomorrow, but biotechnological researchers are working on it & the vaccinated vegetables or
fruit product is not so far-fetched.
