PHILIPPINE CONSTITUTION

1899
•1899 Considered as an assembly that was truly diverse
ethnically and politically and it was the first code of laws in the
country 1987.
•Legislative branch- have the power to elect President and
Chief Justice
• Executive branch - comprised of Pres and his Cabinet
•Judicial branch - composed of Supreme Court headed
by Chief Justice

Preamble 1899
Citizen was not called anymore Tagalog but a Filipino. It
is a culmination of the nationalist struggle for
independence and it established a sovereign government
for all Filipinos.

1935 >The 1935 Constitution was ratified


on May 14, 1935
Features: a) Established the
Commonwealth Government
b) Provide a Democratic and
Republican Government.
c) Inclusion of the Bill of Rights

1973 >The 1973 Constitution was ratified on


January 17,1973
FEATURES: a) Establishment of a modified
parliamentary government
b) Suspension of the Bill of Rights
c) Has given greater power to the Executive
Department
The 1973 Constitution, promulgated after Marcos’ declaration of
martial law, was supposed to introduced a parliamentary-style
government. Legislative power was vested in National Assembly
whose members were elected for six-year terms. The President
was ideally supposed to be elected as a symbolic ceremonial.

1987

state, as well as Filipino
citizenship. These two aspects of
nationhood and governance help
established the limits of
sovereignty over the state, as
well as the people who are
allowed to exercise it.
