19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
TIME PASSES BUT ETERNITY REMAINS.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, death is
a reality yet it remains shocking and
frightening because it is inevitable and we
do not know when, how nor where it will
come. Jesus tells us in the Gospel of today:
“You must stand ready because the Son of
man is coming at an hour you do not
expect.” Life is a preparation for death. We
are like born unto death. It is thus necessary
that we reflect and meditate on death daily.
Time passes but eternity remains. Time
flies, remember you will die. We must use
the little time we have to prepare for
eternity. As such, we have to adopt the right
attitude towards life.
Against the tendency to postpone our
conversion, the Prophet Isaiah warns us:
“Seek the Lord while he is still to be found;
call on him while he is near." (Is. 55:6). You
cannot guarantee tomorrow or even the
next moment.
For those who glory in their youthfulness
and fail to commit themselves to God,
thinking they still have time, Ecclesiastes 11:
9 admonishes: “Young man follow the ways
of your heart and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things, you will
be called to judgment.” Moreover, the
Philosopher Martin Heidegger states: “once
you are born, you are old enough to die."
Death does not discriminate.”
“Happy those servants whom
the master finds awake when
he comes”.
Regarding those who neither pray for the
dead nor for the grace of a good death for
themselves (to die in peace, reconciled with
God and neighbour), there is always a
message for us from the dead like the one
written on plaques in some ancient
cemeteries: "What you are now, we were
and what we are now, you shall be."
The second reading of today tells us: “Only
faith can guarantee the blessings we hope
for or prove the existence of realities that at
present remain unseen" (Heb. 11:1-2). Like
Abraham, our faith and trust in the promises
of God will enable us to adopt a right
attitude that will prepare us for the life
hereafter. Fear God and keep his
commandments, that is the duty of man. (Cf.
Eccl 12:14). If we do this, when death comes
it will be a homecoming and not a
nightmare.
Time passes but eternity remains.
