#1 Activity Solubility of Solid (Sugar)

GROUP NAME:________________

MATERIALS:

2 pcs.of cups
2 pcs.of spatula or tsp.
sugar
warm and cold water

#1 Activity Solubility of Solid (Sugar)

PROCEDURE:

1.Put the same amount of warm and cold water in different cups or
clean plastic bottles.

2. Put 1tsp. of sugar into each cups at the same time.

3.Stir the contents of each cup with a plastic spoon. The mixing
should be done in the same wayand length of time ( stir clockwise 10
times).

4. Show that the contents will be allowed to settle and observe

what happens.

5.Take note of which of the two set-ups dissolved the sugar

faster.

#1 Activity Guide Question:

1.Where does sugar dissolve better, in warm or cold water?

2. Does temperature affect the solubility of sugar? How do you know?

#2 Activity Solubility of Gas (Softdrinks)

GROUP NAME:________________

MATERIALS:

2 pcs.of cups
softdrink
warm and cold water

PROCEDURE:

1.Students will open a bottle of soft drinks.

2.Fill two clear cups or transparent plastic bottles in half with the
soda.

3. Fill one empty cup with about 1/3 of ice cold water, and another empty
cup about 1/3 of warm water.

4. Place one of the soda glass in the cold water and the other warm water.

5.Watch and observe the soda in both cups.

#2 Activity Guide Question:

1. Does temperature have an effect on how quickly dissolved gas

escapes from a soda?
2. Can you tell if there is a difference in the amount of gas
escaping from each sample of soda? What did you observe that made
you think so?

Based on your observation, why do you think people store soda

or soft drinks in refrigerators?
1.Yes, because the way gas escapes in
the form of bubbles from soda is
affected by temperature.
2. More bubbles form and rise to the
surface in the soda placed in hot water
than in cold water.
3. People store soft drinks in
refrigerators to prevent gas (CO2),
from easily escaping the soft drinks.
1.Warm water, because there is a small
amount of sugar left at the bottom of
the glass.
2. Temperature affects solubility of
sugar. The higher the temperature, the
more sugar is dissolved.
