On Thursday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) approved several skill-based courses to six

universities across various states, including one from Bengaluru. The UGC has approved degree programs
in Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics and many more. Experts laud the
Commission for this decision as more and more universities are coming forward with new-age courses to
be offered to students.

For a University in Agra, the UGC has approved Bachelor in Vocational (B. Voc) Degree for AI, Robotics
and IoT. In another university, in Coimbatore, the Commission has approved B. Voc degree program in AI
and Machine Learning.

In JAIN (Deemed to be University), in Bengaluru, the Commission has approved certificate courses like
Digital Marketing Fundamentals, Fundamentals of Patents, Private Banking and Export and Import
Documentation.

A senior member from the retired association of Vice-Chancellors said, “AI, Machine Learning and IoT
being introduced as degree programs demonstrates how, with the help of technology, we have moved
from spanners and drilling machines to something that can function like humans. It will go down in
history that students of this age are getting degree courses like these.” However, the universities have
been asked to send their requests to approve courses or degree programs that are to be sanctioned by
the UGC.
