Daily Lesson Plan for Senior High School

Earth and Life Science

I. Objectives
A. Content Standard
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the origin and extinction of
species.

B. Performance Standard
The learners shall be able to design a poster tracing the evolutionary
changes in a crop plant (e.g. rice or corn) that occurred through
domestication.

C. Learning Performance
The learners shall be able to explain how populations of organisms have
changed and continue to change over time showing patterns of descent
with modification from common ancestors to produce the organismal
diversity observed today.
(S11/12LT-IVfg-26)

II. Content
The Process of Evolution

III. Learning Resources

A. Reference
K-12 Science Curriculum Guide for Senior High School
B. Other Learning Resources
Olivar, Jose Tolentino II and Anna Cherylle Morales-Ramos (2016) Exploring
Life Through Science Series: Earth and Life Science. QC: Phoenix
Publishing House, Inc. pp. 218-221, 227-231.

IV. Procedures
A. Review of the Previous Lesson
Recall:
Evidences of evolution such as homology, DNA/protein sequences, plate
tectonics, fossil record, embryology, and artificial selection/agriculture

B. Establishing the Purpose of the Lesson

Motivation (Picture Analysis):
Let the students compare and contrast the following pictures of animals:
Rice vs. Wheat
Shark vs. Dolphin
Chimpanzee vs. Ape
Flying lemur vs. Flying phalanger

(Note: You may change the examples with local animals that exhibit the
different patterns of descent with modification from a common ancestor)

C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the New Lesson

Relating with the motivation, introduce the topic by presenting the objective
of the lesson by letting the student read/recite the following:
At the end of the period,
1. I will be able to explain how populations of organisms have changed and
continue to change over time.
2. I will be able to identify patterns of descent with modification from
common ancestors.

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills

Group Activity (Fish Bowl):
The students will be asked to form small groups (5 members per group).
A representative from the group will be asked to pick a term from the fish
bowl related to the different patterns of descent with modification from
common ancestors. They will be asked to brainstorm/ give their own
definition/meaning of the term. Finally, one representative will present their
output.
Discussion:
After the activity, based on the given answers of the students, the
teacher will then discuss the different patterns of descent with modification
from common ancestors.
(Convergent, divergent, parallel/coevolution, gradualism, punctuated
equilibrium & adaptive radiation)

E. Developing Mastery
With the same grouping, the students will be asked to make a concept map
including all the patterns of descent with modification and other related
terms. One representative per group will be asked to present their output.

F. Finding Practical Applications of Concepts and Skills in Daily Living

After the group activities, the students will be asked who among them have
pets at home. A few students will be asked to share their answer in class.
The teacher will then asked if they would like a tiger or a wolf for a pet. Then,
they will be asked to compare their pets to their wild counterpart. Finally, a
few students will be asked to discuss the relationship between the wild
animals and their domesticated pets and identify the possible pattern of
descent with modification from their common ancestor.

G. Making Generalizations
One to three students will be asked to summarize all the learnings for the
day. They will be asked to discuss how populations of organisms evolved
showing patterns of descent with modification from a common ancestor.

H. Evaluating Learning
Performance Task:
The learners will be asked to design a poster tracing the evolutionary
changes in a crop plant (e.g. rice or corn) that occurred through
domestication.

I. Additional Activities for Application or Remediation

Graphic Organizer with Essay:
The students will be asked to make a graphic organizer about the topic and
then to make a short essay as a synopsis of the topic.
