LA COMPARACIÓN EN INGLÉS

Al igual que en español, en inglés cuando queremos comparar dos cosas utilizamos los
adjetivos en distintos grados: comparativo y superlativo.

Lo primero en lo que debemos fijarnos es en el tamaño del adjetivo que queremos


comparar.

1.-Los adjetivos de una sola sílaba forman el comparativo añadiendo –ER al adjetivo.
Fast-faster
Big-bigger *recuerda que la combinación consont-vocal-concont hace duplicar
Tall-taller

2.-Los de dos sílabas que terminan en -ER, -Y, -LE y -OW y los que tienen el acento en
la última sílaba forman también el comparativo añadiendo -ER
Clever-cleverer
Happy-happier *recuerda que –Y después de consont se transforma en -i
Idle-idler
Narrow-narrower

3.-El resto de adjetivos de dos sílabas y todos los de tres o más forman el comparativo
poniendo MORE antes del adjetivo (pero separado).
Interesting-more interesting
Boring-more boring
Intelligent-more intelligent

NOTA IMPORTANTE: el QUE que introduce el Segundo elemento de la comparación en


español en siempre en inglés THAN
I am more intelligent than you
She is taller than my brother

Para formar el superlativo no tenemos que aprender nada nuevo. Solo debemos aplicar
las reglas anteriores sustituyendo –ER por –EST en los adjetivos de 1 sílaba o 2 sílabas
(que acaben en –ER, -Y, -LE, -OW) y en los otros de 2 sílabas o más, lo que haremos es
poner delante del adjetivo MOST en lugar de MORE

She is the tallest girl in the classroom.


I am the most intelligent person in the planet.

NOTA IMPORTANTE: ahora ya no usamos THAN (que) porque en el superlativo no


comparamos a una persona con otra sino que decimos que es la más de todos.

EXERCISES:

1.-Escribe el comparativo de los siguientes adjetivos:

2.-Completa con el comparativo estas frases:


1. My house is (big) ___________________than yours.
2. This flower is (beautiful) ___________________than that one.
3. This book is (interesting) ___________________than the film.
4. Non-smokers usually live (long) ___________________than smokers.
5. Are lions (dangerous) ___________________than sharks?
6. A holiday by the sea is (good) ___________________than a holiday in the mountains.
7. It is strange but often a coke is (expensive) ___________________than a beer.
8. Who is (rich) ___________________than the king of Persia?
9. The weather this summer is even (bad) ___________________than last summer.
10.He was (clever) ___________________than all the other students.

3.-Transforma estas frases usando el superlativo:

1. This is a HIGH shool =» This is the ___________________school in London.


2. That was an EASY exercise =» That was the ___________________exercise of the test.
3. This is a COMFORTABLE armchair =» This is the ___________________armchair in this
shop.
4. This is a BIG cheese burger =» This is the ___________________cheese burger of the
McDonald's Company.
5. That was a very BORING conversation =» That was the
___________________conversation of all.
6. That was a DIFFICULT exercise =» That was the ___________________exercise of the
test.
7. He's got a NEW pen =» He's got the ___________________pen of the class.
8. This is an INDIFFERENT pupil =» This is the ___________________pupil of my class.
9. He is a FUNNY boy =» He is the ___________________boy in the world.
10. He is YOUNG than the others =» He is the ___________________ of my class.

4.-Completa con la forma comparativa o superlativa del adjetivo escrito entre


paréntesis.

1. This computer is (new) than your computer.


2. Lisa is (old) than George.
3. George is (young) than Lisa.
4. Lucy is (young) in the class.
5. That car is (expensive) than this car.
6. That car is (expensive) in the market.
7. Your car is (fast) than this car.
8. Your car is (fast) in the race.
9. This house is (big) than my house!
10. This house is (big) in the neighbourhood.
