CHAPTER 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

Extra-Curricular Activities or Extra Academic Activities are those that fall outside

the realm of the normal curriculum of school or university education, performed by

students. Extracurricular activities exist for all students. And generally, volunteer

activities aren't always extracurricular activities. Such activities are generally voluntary,

social, philanthropic, and often involve others of the same age. Students often organize

and direct these activities under faculty sponsorship, although student led initiatives,

such as independent newspapers, are common.

Organized activities may include clubs, athletic opportunities, dance, scouts,

drama, pupil’s council and sports. Mostly, teenagers now a day’s spend their free time

going outside the school day or may also known to be as leisure time. However,

younger kids don’t yet experienced the teenager life of their older brothers and sisters

so meaning they still have a lot of time to express their special hidden talents in school

or maybe in front of the class. So they can practice the confidence that is bugging them

in their stressful times in school and in contests.

By engaging in extracurricular activities, students may be required to maintain

good grades but some schools cost money for you to participate in the activity that you

6
can engage in but how about the families who can’t afford the money needed for their

children to participate? This is one of the impacts of our economy that may be causing

both family budget and school budget. This may affect the student’s connectedness to

his or her school, as if they cannot participate, they may feel left out or isolated.

University of Batangas is also known for its different Inter-School Press

conferences and has a big amount of Academic Performance and inspires you to do

more and do it better. It keeps you in mind of the possibilities to next part of the contest

that you won just like the Division Schools Press Conference. Extra students think when

they hear “Extra” it means a “Plus” to them because they wanted a plus to their

Academic Performance in School. Plus to every contest they won to everything they

have done and did.

Cell phones, tablets, iPads, and more gadgets are some main causes of a

student’s poor productivity in school. He or she doesn’t want to join any contests

because they always think of their gadgets after a day in school. What will the parents

and guardians of the students do to stop too much eye contact with the gadget?

Students should reduce being leisure because maybe in school a teacher asked

you to clean the floor but you simply said “ No ” your behavior might get reduced in your

Grading Period. Activities like sports enhance your secret hidden talent like basketball,

volleyball, badminton, and more activities that could enhance in sports. Extra-Curricular

Activities are also containing a lot for students in UB Elem to make use of their

special hidden talents in school.

7
An extracurricular activity can be almost anything that isn’t required for high

school credit or paid employment. These activities will become very important later,

such as when you are applying to colleges, because they help you develop your talents,

interests, and passions. They can also teach you practical skills like time management.

With so many options out there, all students should be able to find an extracurricular

that they are interested in and can develop a passion for!

Remember that extracurricular activities do not have to be sponsored by your

school, so you should also consider things that you do with your family or within your

community as viable options. Below I've listed many popular activities that you may not

have thought of as extracurricular activities. Take a look at the list and see if your

activities are already on the list, or if anything you hadn't considered before catches

your eye. Of course, this list isn’t complete, because you can turn almost any interest

into an extracurricular. If you are actively involved in something that you don't see here

meaning you spend a significant amount of time doing an activity that is allowing you to

develop a talent or interest, be a leader, or help out your community - then you should

definitely consider that an extracurricular activity, as well! What doesn't necessarily

count as an extracurricular? An interest of yours that's very self-centered.

(blog.prepscholar.com/list-of-extracurricular-activities-examples)

You can get involved with groups as a way to get support from other students

with your background, such as Latino or Jewish clubs. A club or group also can be a

8
great way to meet people who are different from you. Lots of youth programs bring

people together with those who are different as a way to break down the barriers

between people. Mark, a senior who lives in Washington, DC, discovered this when he

volunteered for a group that uses baseball as a way to bring special-education kids and

kids with disabilities together with regular kids.

Participating in extracurricular activities helps you in other ways, too: It looks

good on college and job applications and shows admissions officers and employers

you're well-rounded and responsible. Specific activities help with specific goals if you

want to teach language or get a bilingual job, being the president of the Spanish club

shows the depth of your commitment.

The most basic reason for joining a club or team is that it gives you something

better to do than staring at the wall, wandering the hall, or napping all afternoon. People

who are involved and engaged are less likely to become addicted to bad habits, like

smoking or drinking. (kidshealth.org/en/teens/involved-school.html)

Pupils in the Prep and Senior High are required to participate in one or more

extra-curricular activities each term. At the beginning of term pupils receive a booklet

detailing all the activities on offer. Clubs and societies take place either they do it in

lunch time or after school.

9
An extremely wide variety of clubs and societies is offered. Sporting are very

popular, are ranging from aerobics to volleyball. On the creative side, music, art and

drama also provide many opportunities for pupils to participate outside the classroom.

Other options include cooking, debating and Internet-related ventures.

Statement of the Problem

This study focused on Impact of Extra-Curricular Activities to Brahman Kids.

Specifically, this seeks to the following questions:

1. What are extracurricular activities as identified by Brahmans?

2. What is the impact of extracurricular activities?
3. How do extracurricular activities help the pupils?
4. How do teachers and faculty members of UB coordinate on the poor Impact to the

Brahman Kids?

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study to the following are:
To the students, for them to enhance in their Academic Performance in School and to

be inspired of the hidden skills and talents that they can do in different contests

that they join in. And keeps them inspired of the possibilities if that they can join

in.
To the parents, for them to support their children about the contests that their child are

joining in and help them more to achieve his or her child in tie of the event or

contest.

10
To the teachers, to guide the students and to teach them the different proper manners

in joining contests. And to guide them also with the different precautions in the

contests that students are joining in to avoid the stress of the student if he or she

has two contests in one day.

To the school, for them to create more activities for other students to join in that has

the potential to do the activity with positive attitude and confidence.

Scope and Limitations

This study is limited to the topic of Extra-Curricular activities impact on UB

Brahman Kids. This study may be referred to Elementary students from University of

Batangas to Grade I-VI. Students from each grade level will be interviewed and will be

given an answerable questionnaire.

Several studies may have its limitations. This study only limits to elementary

students only. This study does not limits high school and college students. And most

importantly this study only focuses on the impact of extracurricular activities to Brahman

kids. It also limits to the diseases of the UB Brahman kids because of contests and

activities. It added alertness to the students and keeps them active always in school.

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

A. Related Literature

A common problem for many students involved in extracurricular activities is that

they take on too much. Students should make out a schedule in advance of a semester

that balances school, work, after-school activities, and home life. Also, activities should

be fun rather than stressful for students. School grades should not suffer because of

time spent at work or in after-school activities.

In sports, injuries are not uncommon but can sometimes be prevented with

13
proper conditioning. Every child who plans to participate in organized athletic activity

should have a pre season sports physical. This special examination is performed by a

pediatrician or family physician that carefully evaluates the site of any previous injury,

may recommend special stretching and strengthening exercises to help growing

athletes create and preserve proper muscle and joint interaction, and pays special

attention to the cardiovascular and skeletal systems.

(http:/www.healthofchildren.com/E-F/Extracurricular-Activities.html)

Signs and symptoms of extracurricular activities differ from person to person. But

here are some general warning signs that extracurricular activities may have become a

problem:

Isolation of friends and family. Do extracurricular activities take too much of your

attention and forgot to know what’s happening to your friends and supportive family? Do

you sometimes feel left out or isolated from them?

Losing track of time while doing the activity. Do you often take too much time on the

activity that you forgot to eat? Does a few minutes you asked for turns into a few hours?

Do you get angry if you’re busy practicing the activity that someone will interrupt you?

Feeling sick and pale while involved in the activity. Do you feel somewhat anxious

that you’re sick and you cannot do the activity alone? Do you still continue the activity

even if you’re sick and pale but still capable to do it?

14
Having a hard time continuing the task at school. Do you forget to ask your

classmates what missed seat works and homework’s you have to do? Perhaps, you

knew what to do but did nothing just to think you will get a perfect score?

Feeling guilty about the activity you’re involved on. Do you get angry at your

parents that ask you to rest first before continuing the activity that you are practicing

for? Do you make a story or lie to your friends and family about the result of the contest

you have joined in?

Extracurricular activities can also cause physical discomfort such as Carpal

Tunnel Syndrome (pressure in your wrist and on the median nerve) , Muscle injuries,

Sprain, Back and neck aches, and Headaches.

Extracurricular activities can enhance a student’s school experience in many

ways. Talented athletes and actors can achieve acclaim for their talents, while many

school clubs and projects offer educational and social opportunities that aren’t available

in the classroom. But extracurricular activities have their negative aspects, too.

Students should be aware of the potential pitfalls of those activities to make sure their

school experience is as positive as possible.

Teenagers often struggle with time management, and some extracurricular

activities demand more time and energy than many students can handle. If you’re a

student who needs a little longer than your peers to finish your homework, an activity

that takes up several hours every afternoon after school may not leave you with

15
sufficient time to get all your work done. An alternative might be to get involved with

clubs or activities that only meet once or twice a week or that only meet for short

periods after school.

You may choose an activity that leaves enough time for school work and other

priorities, but you might choose to devote your extra time and attention to that

extracurricular interest. For example, you may love being involved with the drama

program at your school because you love performing or working backstage, and it’s

where your best friends are. So, instead of staying after class to get extra help when

you need it or keeping up with your assignments or following through on chores at

home or other priorities, you hang out at the auditorium or going over your lines and

songs at home, leaving everything else undone until it's too late to catch up.

If you're going to commit to an extracurricular activity, it should be one that you're

interested in and that is rewarding to you. Parents may push certain activities with good

intentions, but if piano lessons are stressful because you'd rather be playing basketball,

talk with your parents about your feelings. Maybe you can find a compromise, such as a

temporary break from lessons during basketball season.

When much of a young person’s life is scheduled, little time remains for the

carefree moments that foster discovery and imagination. This is especially true in

younger children, who need to be able to simply play and allow their minds to develop

new games, instead of following a rigid schedule established by parents and other

16
grownups. If you have a young child who has lessons, sports practice and other

structured activities throughout the week, think about whether he's getting enough "kid

time." If he seems stressed or over-scheduled, drop an activity and allow for some

simple activities like tree climbing, informal games or free play with friends and family.

(classroom.synonym.com › School Subjects)

So, what are the different warning signs of extracurricular activities? Here are the

compiled lists of warning signs to extracurricular activities:

Your child losses track of the time while practicing. He or She disobeys some

rules made by their parents such as the time to obey when the practice of sports

activities are done. Your child eats in front of his or her study table. He or She forgets to

do the different tasks at home. Some may cause different injuries and physical

discomfort. Your child gets annoyed if interrupted practicing his or her talent for the

contest. Easily gets provoked on something that he or she doesn’t want to happen in

the time of the contest. Impatient of the child may be expressed during the contest. Your

child is too preoccupied with the activity they’ve joined in. Signs and symptoms may

occur if your child doesn’t take care it’s oneself. Your child might easily get stressed if

it’s too much attention is the activity and forgets to rest its body. Getting over-scheduled

to have time for friends and family. Sleep is skipped just to continue the activity with

very tired eyes.

17
Most parents with one or more school-age children say it’s easy to find after-

school activities and programs in their community, and this is reflected in the fact that

most parents say their children participated in some form of extracurricular activity in

the 12 months prior to the survey. Sports or athletic activities are the most popular, but

at least half of parents say their children ages 6 to 17 have participated in religious

instruction, taken music, dance or art lessons, or done volunteer work.

B. Related Studies

According to a study, students who participate in extracurricular activities

generally benefit from many opportunities afforded them. Benefits of participating in

extracurricular activities included having better grades, having higher standardized test

scores and higher educational attainment, attending school regularly and having a

higher self concept. Participants in out of school activities often learned skills such as

teamwork and leadership while decreasing the likelihood of alcohol use and illicit drug

use and related problem behaviors.

18
Those who participate in out of school activities often have higher grade point

averages and etc. By engaging in extracurricular activities, students may be required to

maintain good grades in order to meet eligibility to participate in sports or cheerleading.

Eligibility may motivate students to do their best academically in order to participate in

the activity. Competing in a speech contest, may help a student gain confidence, and

being involved in a youth group or scouting organization may help the students or

Brahmans develop character and connect with the community. (http://allofactivities.net/)

Extracurricular activities play an important role in adolescent lives and futures.

Exposure to diverse groups can help promote adolescents to become socially intelligent

and responsible adults. Other studies have shown being involved in extracurricular

activities reduces the likelihood of dropping out of school, likelihood of committing a

criminal offense, and leads to higher educational detainment and success and

achievements in school work, not to mention that the greatest advantage of

participating in at least one of these activities is the decrease in anti-social behaviors

and students growing up to be more successful in communication and relationships.

Additionally, in school settings, interracial friendships positively impacted the individuals

involved and the school culture as a whole.

This study examined the relation between involvement in school-based

extracurricular activities and early school dropout. Longitudinal assessments were

completed for 392 adolescents who were initially interviewed during 7th grade and
19
followed up annually to 12th grade. A person-oriented cluster analysis based on

Interpersonal Competence Scale ratings from teachers in middle schools identified

configurations of boys and girls who differed in social–academic competence. Early

school dropout was defined as failure to complete the 11th grade. Findings indicate that

the school dropout rate among at-risk students was markedly lower for students who

had earlier participated in extracurricular activities compared with those who did not

participate. However, extracurricular involvement was only modestly related to early

school dropout among students who had been judged to be competent or highly

competent during middle school. (http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/dev/33/2/241/)

An extracurricular activity can be almost anything that isn’t required for high

school credit or paid employment. These activities will become very important later,

tomorrow or should we just say every day. Such as when you are applying to colleges,

because they help you develop your talents, interests, and passions. They can also

teach you practical skills like time management. Extracurricular activities are not only

simple activities; it helps you to improve your self-confidence and makes your talents

better. With so many options out there, all students should be able to find an

extracurricular that they are interested in and can develop a passion for!

There are a lot of problems can occur if your child is directly stressed and

haven’t got any sleep and rest he or she wanted. So, here are the following to find out if

your child has an impact or a problem in your child about extracurricular activities.

20
1. Isolation: Extracurricular activities cause oneself to be left behind from friends

and family that you love. But, some kids don’t like to spend time with their family

and parents and get annoyed if told to do so.

2. Losing track of time: When a person is focused too much he or she can lose

track of the time. They don’t even know how long they’ve been practicing too

much. They easily get annoyed when someone disturbs them on what they are

doing in their study table or inside and outside the school campus.

3. Sick and Pale: When a child gets too stressful it might get into a child’s

sickness feeling while in the contest. A child should always be protected and take

cared by his o her parents and family

4. Trouble in completing different tasks: Children have trouble completing

different task such as studying for the upcoming tests, completing their

assignments and seat works at school. It takes more time and nagging for them

to complete their tasks.

5. Feeling guilty: Since the child spends a lot of time in the activity he or she

forgets to notice his or her friends. They are proving to telling lies to hide the

embarrassing situations they had during the contest.

If you have ever noticed any of the above symptoms of your child, then it means

21
that he or she has an impact to the activity. This results in the child to unable to finish

his or her studies in time of the upcoming examinations, losing interest in studying at

school, not doing unfinished assignments, reducing communication with friends an

family. As a parent or guardian, you can help them in overcoming this impact to them

especially when they needed your help.

CHAPTER 3

Research Methodology

In this chapter, the researchers involve and explain the research design, the data

gathering instrument and the subject being used in this study.

Research Design

22
The research will be conducted as a controlled quantitative research studying

which data are collected before and after the intervention. This study intends to collect

material information regarding on impacts of extracurricular activities to Brahman kids.

Descriptive research design is used which involves observing and describing the

behavior of a subject without influencing it in any way. What is really the impact of

extracurricular activities to Brahman kids? The advantage of the extracurricular is that it

can help increase the grades of the Brahman kids; it also gives them information and

learning’s about different things and opinions. While the disadvantages of the

extracurricular activities to Brahman kids is it can distract them from studying which is

not good, it can also make them depend in extracurricular activities instead of studying

to make their grades higher.

Subjects of the Study

The subjects used in this study are the students of University of Batangas that

participated in the extracurricular activities and how will the students will benefit,

develop, and match their interests. Which were randomly chosen to correspond to the

whole community.

Data Gathering Instrument

The group 4 researchers had different respondents from grade levels 4 to 6 by

using a questionnaire as a basic tool for this study. A questionnaire refers to a set of
23
printed or written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purposes of a

survey or statistical study. The advantage of a questionnaire it summarizes all the

different information gathered from the chosen respondents of each grade level. Others

are fond of showcasing their talents in dancing, singing, poster making, and sports

activities while others show their interest in joining the scouting activities to develop

their sense of leadership and discipline with one another.

Data Gathering Procedure

The final action to perform in the next chapter was data gathering. The

researches made the questionnaire with regards to the topic of the UB Brahman Kids

are affected due to extracurricular studies that they are involved in. We researchers

need to distribute the questionnaires to every grade level and teachers. To be exact, we

distributed the given questionnaires to students who are willing to answer the questions

given to them to get different information and opinions from them.

CHAPTER 4

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data

In this chapter, the researcher’s goal is to present the Research Chapter’s

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of data in relation of the Impact of Extra-

Curricular Activities to Brahman Kids.

CHAPTER 5

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendation

33
Summary

In this chapter the group 4 researcher’s goal is to present the summary of the

said findings, with the conclusions gained from the findings and the recommendations.

This research was based on facts rather than opinions of Impact of Extra-

Curricular Activities to Brahman Kids.

Specifically, this chapter wanted to answer the following questions from chapter one’s

statement of the problem and the research’s questionnaire:

1. What extracurricular activities are identified by Brahmans?

2. What is the impact of extracurricular activities?
3. How do extracurricular activities help the pupils?

4. How do faculty members of UB address the poor Impact of extracurricular

activities to Brahman Kids?

Findings

These were the following findings achieved from chapter 4 of the English

research:

34
1. Brahman kids identified that sports contests like volleyball, badminton, basketball and

more are extracurricular activities that achieved the highest amount of tallies

recorded.

2. The most common impact gained by extracurricular activities that extracurricular

activities are helpful and students learn many things from it.

3. Extracurricular activities help the students by having strength to the activity that they
