a) Find all values of x so that R is not a function.

Answers to the Above Questions

11. Solve for x to obtain: x = 3/(2 + k)

The given equation has one solution for all real values of k not equal to -2.

12. Rewrite the given quadratic equation in standard form: Kx 2 + 2x - 1 = 0

Discrimant = 4 - 4(K)(-1) = 4 + 4K

For the equation to have two real solutions, the discriminant has to be positive. Hence we need to solve the
inequality 4 + 4K > 0.

The solution set to the above inequality is given by: K > -1 for which the given equation has two real
solutions.

13. For the system of equations 2x - y = 4 and 6x - 3y = 3K to have an infinite number of solutions, the two
equations must be equivalent.

If we multiply all terms of the first equation by 3, we obtain

6x - 3y = 12

For the two equations to be equivalent we must have 12 = 3K which when solved gives K = 4.

14. Let us first find the square of the lengths of the sides of triangle A, B and C.

Hypotenuse: AC 2 = 16 + y 2

Side AB: AB 2 = 4 + 4 = 8

Side BC: BC 2 = (y - 2) 2 + 36

We now apply Pythagora's theorem: 16 + y 2 = 8 + (y - 2) 2 + 36

Solve the equation to find y = 8.

15. We first find the slopes of the two lines: 2/M and -1/4

For two lines to be perpendicylar, the product of their slopes must be equal to -1. Hence the equation
(2/M)*(-1/4) = -1. Solve for M to find M = 1/2.

16. Let L be the length and W be the width. L = (7/5)W

Perimeter: 2L + 2W = 240, 2(7/5)W + 2W = 240

Solve the above equation to find: W = 50 m and L = 70 m.

17. Let x be the selling price: x - 20%x = 200,000

a) Solve for x to find x = $250,000

b) 20% *250,000 = $50,000

18. Let x be the salary before the increase. Hence x + 15% x = $45,000

Solve for x to find x = $39,130

19. Let x and x + 20 be the speeds of the car from A to B and then from B to A. Hence the distance from A to B
may expressed as 3.5 x and the distance from B to A as 3(x + 20)

The average speed = total distance / total time = (3.5 x + 3 (x + 20)) / (3.5 + 3)
The distance from A to B is equal to the distance from B to A, hence: 3.5 x = 3(x + 20). Solve for x to obtain
x = 120 km/hr.

We now substitute x by 120 in the formula for the average speed to obtain.

average speed = 129.2 km/hr

1 - shift right 3 units : f(x - 3)

2- reflect on the x-axis : - f(x - 3)

3 - shift down 2 units : - f(x - 3) - 2

4 - connect the transformed points to sketch the transformed graph shown in red below.

f. l(x) = | 1/(x - 3) |

Answers to the Above Questions

3. Find the domain.

a. Domain is found by setting x 2 - 4 ≠ 0 because division by 0 is not allowed.

Domain: (-∞ , -2) U (-2 , 2) U (2 , ∞)

b. x 2 + 4x + 3 ≠ 0 , division by 0 is not allowed.

Solve: x 2 + 4x + 3 = 0 , solutions: x = -3 and x = -1

Domain: (-∞ , -3) U (-3 , -1) U (-1 , ∞)

c. x 2 + 5x - 6 ≥ 0 , quantity under square root has to be positive or equal to zero for function to be
real.

Solve: x 2 + 5x - 6 ≥ 0 , solution set: (-∞ , -6) U (1 , ∞)

Domain: (-∞ , -6) U (1 , ∞)

d. (x - 2) 2 > 0 , quantity under square root has to be positive. It is a square. It cannot be zero
because division by zero is not allowed. Hence x must be different from 2.

Domain: (-∞ , 2) U (2 , ∞)

e. x - √(x + 2) ≠ 0 , division by 0 not allowed.

Also: x + 2 > 0 , expression under square root has to be positive.

Solve: x - √(x + 2) ≠ 0 , solution: x = 2

Solve: x + 2 > 0 , solution set: [-2 , 2) U (2 , ∞)

f. x + 3 > 0 , argument of logarithm must be positive for function to take real values.

Domain: (-3 , ∞)

4. Find the range.

a. f(x) = -x 2 + 6x + 5 = -(x - 3) 2 + 14

-(x - 3) 2 ≤ 0 , for all x real.

Add 14 to both sides of the inequality

-(x - 3) 2 + 14 ≤ 14

The left side is the given function. Hence the range is given by the interval

(-∞ , 14]

b. g(x) = |x + 3| - 2

|x + 3| ≥ 0 , for all x real.

Add -2 to both sides of the inequality

|x + 3| - 2 ≥ -2

The left side is the given function. Hence the range is given by the interval

[-2 , ∞)

c. h(x) = (x - 2)/(x + 3)

The inverse function of the given function h is

h -1 (x) = (3x + 2) / (1 - x)

The range of h is the domain of h -1 and is given by the interval (-∞ , 1) U (1 , ∞)

d. k(x) = |x 3 + 4|

x 3 + 4 has a range given by the interval (-∞ , ∞)

Because of the absolute value function k(x) = |x 3 + 4| has a range given by the interval [0 , ∞)

e. j(x) = | (x + 3) (x - 2) |

The graph of the y = (x + 4) (x - 2) is a parabola with x intercepts at x = -4 and x = 2 and a vertex

at (-1 , -9) opening up upward. Part of the graphs in the interval (-4 , 2) between the x intercepts is
under the x axis and will therefore be reflected above the x axis when the absolute value is
applied. Hence the range of j(x) = | (x + 3) (x - 2) | is given by the interval [0 , ∞)

f. l(x) = | 1/(x - 3) |

The range of 1/x is given by (0 , ∞). The graph of 1/(x - 3) is the graphs of 1/x shifted 3 units to the
right and therefore 1/(x - 3) has the same range as 1/x. Taking the absolute value of 1/(x - 3) to
get l(x) = | 1/(x - 3) | will change the range to (0 , ∞) which is the range of l(x).

P(x)Q(x) = (2x 2 - 3x)(3x 2 + x - 5)

= 6x 4 - 7x 3 -13x 2 + 15x

17.

P(x)/ Q(x) = (2x 4 - x 3 -3x 2 + 7x - 13) / (x 2 - 4)

= 2x 2 - x + 5 + (3x + 7) / (x 2 - 4)

quotient = 2x 2 - x + 5 , remainder = 3x + 7

18.
Zeros at 0, 1, 3 and 4, hence P(x) can be written as P(x) = A x (x - 1)(x - 3)(x - 4)

We now use the point (2 , 2) to write P(2) = 2 and use it to find the constant A = 1/2.

P(x) = (1/2) x (x - 1)(x - 3)(x - 4)

Expand to find

P(x) = (1/2)x 4 - 4x 3 + (19/2)x 2 - 6x

19.
Using remainder theorem, remainder = P(1) = 4*1 200 + 5*1 95 - 4*1 21 + 2*1 - 6 = 1

20.
P(x) = -2(x - 1)(x + 2)(x - 3) = -2 x 3 + 4 x 2 + 10 x - 12

21.

According to the rational zeros theorem, the possible rational zeros are as follows: ~+mn~1 , ~+mn~1/3 ,
~+mn~5/3 , ~+mn~3 , ~+mn~5

Substituting or using synthetic division, it can easily be shown that -3 and -5/3 are rational zeros of P(x).
hence P(x) may be written as

P(x) = (x + 3)(x + 5/3) Q(x)

Q(x) = P(x) / (x + 3)(x + 5/3) = 3x 2 + 12 x + 3 (using division)

The remaining zeros of P(x) are the zeros of Q(x) which are -2 + √3 and -2 - √3.

22.

If (x - 2) is a factor, then P(2) = 0. The remainder theorem also states that P(1) = 3. After substitutions P(2)
and P(1), we obtain a system of 2 equations in c and d.

2c + d = -12 and c + d = 1

solve to find: c = -13 and d = 14

23.

If P(-2) = 0, then -2 is a zero of P. Since P is even 2 is also a zero of P because of the symmetry of the
graph of P with respect to y axis.
If P(x + 3) has a zero at x = 4, then P(x) has a zero at x = 1 since the graph of P(x + 3) is the graph of P(x)
shifted 3 units left. Also and because of symmetry x = -1 is a zero of P. Hence P has 4 zeros: -2, -1, 1 and
2 and P(0) = -9.

P(x) = A (x + 1)(x + 2)(x - 1)(x - 2)

Use P(0) = -9 to find coefficient A = -9/4

P(x) = -(9/4) (x + 1)(x + 2)(x - 1)(x - 2) = -(9/4) x 4 + (45/4)x 2 - 9

24.
Since x = 1/2 and x = -3 are zeros of P, we can write
P(x) = (x - 1/2)(x + 3) Q(x)

Q(x) = P(x) / (x - 1/2)(x + 3) = 2(x 2 - x - 4) (using division)

The remaining zeros of P(x) are the zeros of Q(x): 1/2 + (1/2)√17 and 1/2 - (1/2)√17.

25.

a) f(x) = x 3 - x 2 - 4 x + 4

= x 2(x - 1) - 4(x - 1)

b) f(x) = 2 x 2 - x 3

= x 2(2 - x)

c) f(x) = x 2 - 2 x 4

= -((x + 1)(x - 3)) 2

= -(x + 1) 2(x - 3) 2

e) f(x) = x 4 + 3 x 3 + 3 x 2 + x

= x (x 3 + 3 x 2 + 3 x + 1)

= x(x + 1) 3

4) Leading coefficient in P is negative, graph going down on the left and on the right.

29.
a) The degree of f odd since its graph has 5 x-intercepts and the complex zeros come in pairs.

b) The leading coefficient is negative because the graph is going down on the right and up on the left.

c) No, the degree of a polynomial is determined by real and complex zeros. Only the real zeros in the form

30. The given polynomial, the divisor (x2 - 1), the remainder 5x + 4 and the quotient Q(x) are related as follows:

3x3 + qx2 + px + 7 = Q(x)(x2 - 1) + 5x + 4.

Substitute x by 1 and -1 on both sides of the equation to obtain 2 equations in q and p.

x = 1: 3 + q + p + 7 = 0 + 9 (1)

x = -1: -3 + q - p + 7 = -1

Solve the above system of equations to find: q = -3 and p = 2.

Answers to the Above Questions
12. Find the equation of a circle whose center is at the point (-2 , 3) and its diameter has a length of 10.

Standard equation of a circle with radius r and center at the point (h , k) is given by

(x - h) 2 + (y - k) 2 = r 2

In this problem r = 10 / 2 = 5 and h = -2 and k = 3.

The equation of this circle is given by: (x + 2) 2 + (y - 3) 2 = 25

13. Group the terms in x and x 2 and the terms in y and y 2 in the given equation

(x 2 + 4x) + (y 2 - 8y) = 5

Complete the squares inside the brackets.

(x 2 + 4x + 4 - 4) + (y 2 - 8y + 16 - 16) = 5

(x + 2) 2 + (y - 4) 2 = 25.

Identify the above as the standard equation of a circle with center (-2 , 4) and radius 5.

14. Find an equation of the circle that is is tangent to both the x and y axes, with a radius of 4 and whose
center is located in the second quadrant.

Since the circle is tangent to the x axis, the distance from the center to x axis is equal to the radius 4. In the
same way the circle is tangent to the y axis and therefore the distance from the center to the y axis is also
equal to the radius. Hence the center has coordinates (-4 , 4). The equation of this circle is given by

(x + 4) 2 + (y - 4) 2 = 16

15. We first need to find the radius which is given by the distance from the center to the point (1 , 2)

r = √[ (6 - 2) 2 + (-4 - 1) 2 ] = √41

The equation is given by

(x + 4) 2 + (y - 6) 2 = 41

16.

Since the circle is tangent to the y axis, the radius is equal to the distance from the center to the y axis
which is the absolute value of the y coordinate of the center and that is 6.

The equation is given by

(x + 3) 2 + (y - 6) 2 = 36

17.

Since the circle is tangent to the x axis, the radius is equal to the distance from the center to the x axis
which is the absolute value of the x coordinate of the center and that is 2.

The equation is given by

(x - 2) 2 + (y + 5) 2 = 4

18.

We first find the radius r which is half the length of the diameter

r = 1/2 √(64 + 16) = 2 √5

The center C is the midpoint of A and B: C(-1 , 4)

The equation is give by: (x + 1) 2 + (y - 4) 2 = 20

19.

x intercept (set y = 0 in given equation) : x 2 + 3x = 18

solve for x: x = 3 and x = -6 , 2 x intercepts: (3 , 0) and (-6 , 0)

y intercept (set x = 0 in given equation) : y 2 - 4y = 18

solve for y: y = 2 - √22 and y = 2 + √22 , 2 y intercepts: (0 , 2 - √22) and (0 , 2 + √22)

20.

We first write the equation in standard form and find the center and radius of the circle. By completing the
squares, the given equation can be written as follows

(x + 2) 2 + (y - 4) 2 = 5 2

Center at (-2 , 4) and radius = 5

We now calculate the distance d from the center to point A(-3 , 8)

d = √(1 + 16) = √17 = 4.1 (to the nearest tenth)

Since the distance from the center to point A is smaller than the radius, point A is inside the circle.

21. We need to solve the system of equations as follows: Substitute y by 3x in the equation of the circle

(x - 2) 2 + (3x - 6) 2 = 40

Solve for x to find the solutions: x = 0 and x = 4

Use y = 3x to find the corresponding values of y

For x = 0 , y = 3x = 0 and for x = 4 , y = 12.

The points of intersection are: (0 , 0) and (4 , 12)

22.

a) M: (2 , 4)

b) L(MA) = √(16 + 9) = 5

L(MB) = √(16 + 9) = 5

L(MC) = √(16 + 9) = 5
c) The three points are at equal distances from point M and therefore point M is the center of the circle;
hence the equation is given by

(x - 2) 2 + (y - 4) 2 = 25

15. We first need to find the radius which is given by the distance from the center to the point (1 , 2)

r = √[ (6 - 2) 2 + (-4 - 1) 2 ] = √41

18.

We first find the radius r which is half the length of the diameter

r = 1/2 √(64 + 16) = 2 √5

We now calculate the distance d from the center to point A(-3 , 8)

d = √(1 + 16) = √17 = 4.1 (to the nearest tenth)

L(MC) = √(16 + 9) = 5

c) The three points are at equal distances from point M and therefore point M is the center of the circle;

Answers to the Above Questions

11. Multiply all terms of the equation by 25 to obtain

(25/9) x 2 + (9) y 2 = 1

The above equation may be written in the form x 2 / a 2 + y 2 / b 2 = 1 as follows

x 2 / (3/5) 2 + y 2 / (1/3) 2 = 1

with a = 3/5 and b = 1/3. The major axis is the x axis and its length is equal to 2a = 6/5 = 1.2

12.

a) Divide all terms of the equation by 32 to obtain

x 2 / 4 + y 2 / 16 = 1

The above equation may be written as follows

x2 / b2 + y2 / a2 = 1

with a = 4 and b = 2 and a > b. Hence the major axis is the y axis and the minor axis is the x axis. The
length of the major axis = 2a = 8 and the length of the minor axis = 2b = 4

b) The vertices are on the major axis at the points (0 , a) = (0 , 4) and (0 , -a) = (0 , -4)

c) The foci are on the major axis at the points (0 , c) and (0 , -c) such that

c 2 = a 2 - b 2 = 12.

Hence the foci are at the points (0 , 2√3) and (0 , -2√3)

13. Both the focus and the vertex lie in the y axis which means that the major axis is the y axis. The equation of
the ellipse has the form

x2 / b2 + y2 / a2 = 1

a is the distance from the center of the ellipse to the a vertex and is equal to 6. c is the distance from the
center of the ellipse to a focus and is equal to 4. Also a, b and c are related as follows

b 2 = a 2 - c 2 = 36 - 16 = 20

b = 2√5

The equation of the ellipse is given by

x 2 / 20 + y 2 / 36 = 1

14. From the coordinates of the foci, c = 5 and the major axis is the y axis. From the length of the major axis,
we obtain a = 7. Also b 2 = a 2 - c 2 = 24.

The equation of the ellipse is given by

x 2 / 24 + y 2 / 49 = 1

15.

Length of major axis is 10 hence a = 5 and the equation may be written as follows

x 2 / 25 + y 2 / b 2 = 1

We now use the fact that the point (3 , 16/5) lies on the graph of the ellipse to find b 2.

3 2 / 25 + (16/5) 2 / b 2 = 1

Solve the above for b to find b = 4 and write the equation as follows

x 2 / 25 + y 2 / 16 = 1

16. An ellipse has the following equation

0.2x 2 + 0.6y 2 = 0.2

a) Solve the above equation for x and select the solution for which x is positive

x = √(1 - 3y 2)

b) Solve the ellipse equation for y and select the solution for which y is negative.
y = - √(1/3 - (1/3)x 2)

17. Given equation

(x - 1) 2 / 9 + (y + 4) 2 / 16 = 1

a) Ellipse with center at (h , k) = (1 , -4) with a = 4 and b = 3.

a) its major axis is the line x = 1, and its minor is the line y = -4. length of major axis = 2a = 8 , length of
minor axis = 2b = 6

b) vertices at: (1 , -4 + 4) = (1 , 0) and (1 , -4 - 4) = (1 , -8)

c) c = √(a 2 - b 2) = √7

Foci at: (1 , -4 + √7) and (1 , -4 - √7)

18. Find the equation of the ellipse whose foci are at (-1 , 0) and (3 , 0) and the length of its minor axis is 2.

The center of the ellipse is the midpoint of the two foci and is at (2 , 0).

c is the length from one foci to the center, hence c = 2.

length of minor axis 2 = 2b hence b = 1

a2 = b2 + c2 = 5

Since the foci are on the x axis, the major axis of the ellipse is the x axis.

Equation of ellipse:

(x - 2) 2 / 5 + y 2 = 1

.
19.

x = 6 sin(t) and y = 4 cos(t)

The parametric equations can be written as follows:

x / 6 = sin(t) and y / 4 = cos(t)

Square both sides of the two equations: (x / 6) 2 = sin 2(t) and (y / 4) 2 = cos 2(t)

Use the fact that sin 2(t) + cos 2(t) = 1 to write

x 2 / 36 + y 2 / 16 = 1

a = 6 , b = 4, c = √(36 - 16) = 2√5

major axis: x axis , length = 12

minor axis: y axis , length = 8

of the dish.
.

Answers to the Above Questions

11. The distance from the vertex (0 , 0) to the focus (0 , 4) is |a| = 4. Since the vertex is at (0 , 0) and the focus
is at (0 , 4) on the y axis, the parabola opens upward which means a = 4 and its equation is given by

x 2 = 4a y = 16 y

12. Since the x axis is the axis of symmetry of the parabola and its vertex is at the origin, the equation of the
parabola has the form

y 2 = 4a x

The point (-2 , 4) lies on the parabola: 4 2 = 4a (-2)

Solve for a: a = -2 ; the equation is: y 2 = -8 x

13. Find an equation of the parabola with vertex at (0 , 2) and focus at (0 , 6).

Since the vertex is at (0 , 2) and the focus is at (0 , 6), the parabola opens upward and the equation of a
parabola with vertex at (h , k) is given by
(x - h) 2 = 4a (y - k)

h = 0 and k = 2; the equation is given by: x 2 = 4a (y - 2)

|a| = distance from vertex to focus = 4 , since parabola opens upward a = 4

the equation is given by: x 2 = 16 (y - 2)

14. We first complete the square using the terms in y and y 2 and write the given equation in the form (y - k) 2 =
4a (x - h) where (h , k) is the vertex and the focus is at (h + a , k), the axis of symmetry is given by y = k
and the directrix is given by x = h - a.

2(y 2 + 4y) + x + 1 = 0

2((y + 2) 2 - 4) + x + 1 = 0

(y + 2) 2= - (1/2)(x - 7)

vertex at (7 , -2)

-(1/2) = 4a , hence a = -1/8

focus at (7 - 1/8 , -2) = (6.875 , -2)

axis of symmetry given by y = -2

Directrix is a vertical line given by: x = h - a = 7 + 1/8 = 7.125

15. We first complete the square using the terms in x and x 2 and write the given equation in the form (x - h) 2 =
4a (y - k) where (h , k) is the vertex and the focus is at (h , k + a), the axis of symmetry is given by x = h
and the directrix is given by y = k - a

x 2 - 8x - y + 2 = 0

((x - 4) 2 - 16) - y + 2 = 0

(x - 4) 2= (y + 14)

vertex at (4 , -14)

1 = 4a , hence a = 1/4
focus at (4 , -14 + 1/4) = (4 , -13.75)

axis of symmetry given by x = 4

Directrix is a horizontal line given by: y = k - a = - 14 - 1/4 = -14.25

16. The vertex and the focus are on the same vertical line x = -2 with the focus below the vertex, therefore the
parabola opens downward and its equation has the form

(x - h) 2 = 4a (y - k) , vertex at (h , k)

with the vertex at (h , k) = (-2, -2), the equation is give by

(x + 2) 2 = 4a (y + 2)

The distance from the vertex (-2 , -2) to the focus (-2 , -8) is |a| = 6. Since the parabola opens downward a
= -6.

The equation of the parabola is given by: (x + 2) 2 = -24 (y + 2)

17. The vertex is at (2 , 4)

(y - k) 2 = 4a (x - h) , vertex at (h , k)

with the vertex at (h , k) = (2, 4), the equation is give by

(y - 4) 2 = 4a (x - 2)

Use the point (-2 , -2) to find a as follows

(-2 - 4) 2 = 4a (-2 - 2)

solve the above for a: a = -2.25

Equation of the parabola: (y - 4) 2 = -9 (x - 2)

The focus is at (h + a , k) = (2 - 2.25 , 4) = (-0.25 , 4)

18. Since the directrix is the x = 2 and the focus is at (8 , 0), the parabola has the x axis as an axis of symmetry
and opens to the right. Its equation is of the form
(y - k) 2 = 4a (x - h) , vertex at (h , k)

The vertex is the midpoint of the point (2 , 0), which the point of intersection of the directrix and the x axis,
and the focus ( 8 , 0). Hence h = 5 and k = 0. The distance between the directrix and the focus is twice |a|.
Hence 2|a| = 6, |a| = 3 and since the parabola opens to the right a = 3.

y 2 = 12 (x - 5)

19. The focus is on the y axis and therefore has the form F(0 , b). The distance from the given point to the
directrix is equal to 10. By definition any point on the parabola, and particular point (- 6 , -8), should be at
equal distances from the directrix and the focus. Hence

10 = √(6 2 + (b + 8)) 2)

Solve the above for b: 2 solutions b = 0 and b = -16

THERE ARE TWO SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM

First solution: the distance from the focus F(0 , 0) to the directrix y = 2 is equal to 2|a|, hence |a| = 1 and a =
-1 since parabola opens downward. The vertex is at (0 , 1), at equal distances from the focus and the
directrix.

equation: x 2 = - 4 (y - 1)

Second solution: the distance from the focus F(0 , -16) to the directrix y = 2 is equal to 2|a|, hence |a| = 9
and a = -9 since parabola opens downward. The vertex is at (0 , -7), at equal distances from the focus and
the directrix.

equation: x 2 = - 36 (y + 7)

20. The equation of the patrabolic dish is of the form: x 2 = 4 a y

Point (100 , 50) lies on the graph of the parabolic dish, hence

100 2 = 4 a * 50

solve to find: a = 50 which is also the distance from the vertex at (0 , 0) to the focus. Hence the focus is at
(0 , 50 cm).

c 2 = 1 + 16 = 17. Foci are at (0 , √17) and (0 , -√17).
13. Since the y axis is the transverse axis, the equation has the form y 2 / a 2 - x 2 / b 2 = 1

(0,0) and the equation of the hyperbola ha s the form y 2 / a 2 - x 2 / b 2 = 1 with a 2 = 49. The asymptote is
given by y = +or-(a/b)x, hence a/b = 3 which gives a 2 = 9 b 2.

18. Since the foci are at (-1,0) and (1,0), the transverse axis of the hyperbola is the x axis, the center is at (0,0)
and the equation of the hyperbola has the form x 2 / a 2 - y 2 / b 2 = 1 with c 2 = 1 2 = a 2 + b2
The asymptote is given by y = (b/a)x, hence a/b = 3/1 = 3 which gives a 2 = 9 b 2.
Solve both equations: 1 = a 2 + b 2 and a 2 = 9 b 2.
Solve to find: b 2 = 1/10 and a 2 = 9/10
The equation of the hyperbola is given by: (10/9) x 2 / - 10 y 2 / b 2 = 1

19. The equation of the hyperbola has the form: x 2 / a 2 - y 2 / b 2 = 1

Use point (3 , 1) to write: 3 2 / a 2 - 1 2 / b 2 = 1

The asymptote has the form: y = + or - (b/a)x, using the point (4,2) that lies on the asymptote we write: b / a
= 2/4 = 1/2 or 4 b 2 = a 2

Solve the two equations to find: a 2 = 5 and b 2 = 5/4

The equation of the hyperbola has the form: x 2 / 5 - y 2 / (5/4) = 1

Solution to Problem 1:

 Given the equation

5(-3x - 2) - (x - 3) = -4(4x + 5) + 13

 Multiply factors.

-15x - 10 - x + 3 = -16x - 20 +13

 Group like terms.

-16x - 7 = -16x - 7

 Add 16x + 7 to both sides and write the equation as follows

0=0

 The above statement is true for all values of x and therefore all real numbers are solutions to the given equation.

Solution to Problem 2:

 Given the algebraic expression

2(a -3) + 4b - 2(a -b -3) + 5

 Multiply factors.

= 2a - 6 + 4b -2a + 2b + 6 + 5

 Group like terms.

= 6b + 5

Solution to Problem 3:

 Given the expression

|x - 2| - 4|-6|

 If x < ;2 then x - 2 < 2 and if x - 2 < 2 the |x - 2| = -(x - 2).

 Substitute |x - 2| by -(x - 2) and |-6| by 6 .

|x - 2| - 4|-6| = -(x - 2) -4(6) = -x -22

Solution to Problem 4:

 The distance d between points (-4 , -5) and (-1 , -1) is given by

d = sqrt[ (-1 - -4) 2 + (-1 - -5) 2 ]

 Simplify.

d = sqrt(9 + 16) = 5

Solution to Problem 5:

 Given the equation

2x - 4y = 9

 To find the x intercept we set y = 0 and solve for x.

2x - 0 = 9

 Solve for x.

x=9/2

 The x intercept is at the point (9/2 , 0).

Solution to Problem 6:

 Given the function

f(x) = 6x + 1

 f(2) - f(1) is given by.

f(2) - f(1) = (6*2 + 1) - (6*1 + 1) = 6

Solution to Problem 7:

 Given the points (-1, -1) and (2 , 2), the slope m is given by

m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1) = (2 - -1) / (2 - -1) = 1

Solution to Problem 8:

 Given the line

5x - 5y = 7

 Rewrite the equation in slope intercept form y = mx + b and identify the value of m the slope.

-5y = -5x + 7

y = x - 7/5

 The slope is given by the coefficient of x which is 1.

Solution to Problem 9:

 To find the equation of the line through the points (-1 , -1) and (-1 , 2), we first use the slope m.

m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1) = (2 - -1) / (-1 - -1) = 3 / 0

 The slope is indefined which means the line is perpendicular to the x axis and its equation has the form x = constant. Since both
points have equal x coordinates -1, the equation is given by:

x = -1

Solution to Problem 10:

 The equation to solve is given by.

|-2x + 2| -3 = -3

 Add 3 to both sides of the equation and simplify.

|-2x + 2| = 0
 |-2x + 2| is equal to 0 if -2x + 2 = 0. Solve for x to obtain

x=1

Solving Simple Equations

When solving a simple equation, think of the equation as a balance, with the equals sign (=)
being the fulcrum or center. Thus, if you do something to one side of the equation, you must do
the same thing to the other side. Doing the same thing to both sides of the equation (say, adding 3
to each side) keeps the equation balanced.

Solving an equation is the process of getting what you're looking for, or solving for, on one side
of the equals sign and everything else on the other side. You're really sorting information. If
you're solving for x, you must getx on one side by itself.

Addition and subtraction equations

Some equations involve only addition and/or subtraction.

Example 1

Solve for x.

x + 8 = 12

To solve the equation x + 8 = 12, you must get x by itself on one side. Therefore,
subtract 8 from both sides.

To check your answer, simply plug your answer into the equation:

Example 2

Solve for y.

y – 9 = 25

To solve this equation, you must get y by itself on one side. Therefore, add 9 to both
sides.

To check, simply replace y with 34:

Example 3

Solve for x.

x + 15 = 6

To solve, subtract 15 from both sides.

To check, simply replace x with –9 :

Notice that in each case above, opposite operations are used; that is, if the equation
has addition, you subtract from each side.

Multiplication and division equations

Some equations involve only multiplication or division. This is typically when the variable
is already on one side of the equation, but there is either more than one of the variable,
such as 2 x, or a fraction of the variable, such as

or

In the same manner as when you add or subtract, you can multiply or divide both sides
of an equation by the same number, as long as it is not zero, and the equation will not
change.

Example 4

Solve for x.

3x=9

Divide each side of the equation by 3.

To check, replace x with 3:

Example 5

Solve for y.

To solve, multiply each side by 5.

To check, replace y with 35:

Example 6

Solve for x.
To solve, multiply each side by .

Or, without canceling,

Notice that on the left you would normally not write because it would always cancel
to 1 x, or x.

Combinations of operations

Sometimes you have to use more than one step to solve the equation. In most cases,
do the addition or subtraction step first. Then, after you've sorted the variables to one
side and the numbers to the other, multiply or divide to get only one of the variables
(that is, a variable with no number, or 1, in front of it: x, not 2 x).

Example 7

Solve for x.

2 x + 4 = 10

Subtract 4 from both sides to get 2 x by itself on one side.

Then divide both sides by 2 to get x.

To check, substitute your answer into the original equation:

Example 8

Solve for x.

5x – 11 = 29

Add 11 to both sides.

Divide each side by 5.

To check, replace x with 8:

Example 9

Solve for x.

Subtract 6 from each side.

Multiply each side by .

To check, replace x with 9:

Example 10

Solve for y.

Add 8 to both sides.

Multiply each side by .

To check, replace y with –25:

Example 11

Solve for x.

3x+2=x+4

Subtract 2 from both sides (which is the same as adding –2).

Subtract x from both sides.

Note that 3 x – x is the same as 3 x – 1 x.

Divide both sides by 2.

To check, replace x with 1:

Example 12

Solve for y.

5y+3=2y+9

Subtract 3 from both sides.

Subtract 2 y from both sides.

Divide both sides by 3.

To check, replace y with 2:

Sometimes you need to simplify each side (combine like terms) before actually starting
the sorting process.

Example 13

Solve for x.

3 x + 4 + 2 = 12 + 3

First, simplify each side.

Subtract 6 from both sides.

Divide both sides by 3.

To check, replace x with 3:

Example 14

Solve for x.

4 x + 2 x + 4 = 5 x + 3 + 11

Simplify each side.

6 x + 4 = 5 x + 14

Subtract 4 from both sides.

Subtract 5 x from both sides.

To check, replace x with 10:
