SYMBOLS IN A WEDDING

1. Why are symbols (or exchange of symbolic objects) important in a committed

relationship like marriage or during a wedding ceremony? (10 points)

The exchange of symbolic objects during a wedding ceremony brings a sense of

individuality and exclusivity to an event that would have been a regular rite in
almost everyone’s lives. This also reflects the couple’s values and priorities which
would provide the personal touch that distinguishes them from the others.

2. Research on at least 5 symbolic objects used in a Catholic wedding rite and briefly
discussed their meanings. (10 points)

A. Rings: Everlasting love of God and the fidelity of the marrying couple. The
roundness of the rings represents eternal love, just like how the circle has
no beginning nor end.
B. Candles: God’s presence at the union. Also signifies the unity of couple’s
Christian homes and families.
C. Bible: The husband’s acceptance of the role being the spiritual leader of
the family.
D. Veil: The union and oneness of the marrying couple. Two individuals will
become one – sharing a home and family.
E. Coins: The grooms pledge of dedication to support the bride and their
family. Also signifies prosperity and the fulfillment of their dreams.

3. For each of your researched/identified symbolic object, extend each symbolic

meaning into your own search for meaning in life. (Ex. wedding ring - how does its
meaning become relevant to your own search for meaning in life?; 10 points)
A. Rings: Knowing that God’s love is eternal provides a sense of security in
this insecure world. Understanding that no matter what happens – whether
you unintentionally create mistakes or do selfish acts – He will always be
there for you. It gives you strength to pursue whatever your heart desires
and take the leap of faith.
B. Candles: When you feel like you are alone and the world has turned against
you, it reminds you that God is always there. He is that speck of light that
brings hope in the darkness of life.
C. Bible: My dad accepted the role of the spiritual leader in the family and
having someone who would help you lead on a healthy spiritual journey is
always a great thing to have. He provides the guidance one needs.
D. Veil: When my parents decided to get married, they have always worked
together to give my siblings and I a great life. Their never-ending support
and love give me the privilege to do the things that I want and need in order
to find my path.
E. Coins: My parents dedication to provide my siblings and I with the help we
need to accomplish our dreams has given me the avenue to pursue my
dreams without any reservations.
