Employer Service Project

Objective: My goal with the employer service project was to become more involved in my work
community and to help give back to the patients we treat every day by volunteering at the
Women’s Health Care Classic.

Background: The Women’s Health Care Classic is an annual golf outing that raises money for the
women’s breast care programs and services at Beaumont hospitals. The events take place at
the Dearborn Country Club and TPC Michigan. 100 golfers attended the outing at Dearborn
Country Club and 116 golfers attended the event at TPC Michigan. Over the past 26 years the
golf outing has raised 6.4 million dollars. The money raised at this event goes to installing new
technology, offering free mammograms, purchasing wigs, providing transportation, and nurse
navigation services. The money from this outing also has helped Beaumont to be the first in the
nation to install the Invenia Automated Breast Ultrasound unit which helps to screen for breast
cancer.

Event Description: Through the events tab on Beaumont Health System’s webpage my
classmate Makelle found that Beaumont needed volunteers to help with an annual golf outing
to raise money for breast cancer services. We thought that this event hit close to home as
breast cancer is one of the top cancers that we treat. On June 10, 2019 we showed up to the
TPC of Michigan which was the golf course hosting the event. Early in the morning we got
started setting up the volunteer tables and gift bags for the golfers. We also helped in prepping
the golf carts with water bottles and towels for the golfers. Once everyone began to arrive
Makelle and I were in charge of the bag drop table. Our job was to greet the golfers as soon as
they walked in, assign a tag to their golf bags with information on which hole they would be
starting out, and send the golfers in the direction of the registration table. This lasted most of
the morning and once the golfers went out to the course we helped with clean up and got to

enjoy a nice meal with the other volunteers. After the event was over we found out that we
raised $362,000 to benefit breast cancer programs.

Reflection: I thought this event was a great way to get involved in the institution that has
helped me so much in my education. I found it very rewarding that I was able to create a fun
and welcoming environment for golfers and donors who in return contributed to such an
important cause. It was wonderful to meet other volunteers who worked at various
departments at Beaumont and to hear how the money raised benefited various places. I also
felt good knowing that I was playing a part in helping the patients that I plan treatments for
every day. After taking part in this event I want to make it a goal to participate in one employer
volunteer event per year wherever I may end up working. This gave me an opportunity to see
that there is more ways to help people in my job than I may realize and it was fun to work as a
team to pull off such a large event!
