2𝑥𝑦
2. Average speed = 𝑥+𝑦, where x & y are two difference speed covering equi-distance
3. Relative speed: i) If both running in same direction, then RS= x-y
ii) if both running in opposite direction, then RS=x+y
4. If speed of boat in Stillwater is u kmph & speed of stream is v kmph,

5. If the speed downstream is a kmph & speed upstream is b kmph, then,
Speed in still water= ½(a+b) kmph
Rate of stream= ½ (a-b) kmph

Example problems:

1.A train can cover 1500km in 10 hours. If the speed is increased by 50 kmph, how much time
does the train takes to cover a distance of 2400 km?
Solution:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 1500
Speed= 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = 10 = 150 kmph
As speed is increased by 50 kmph, new speed = 150+50=200 kmph
2400
so, New time= 200 = 12 hours

2.A person covers a certain distance at a certain speed. If he decreases his speed by 20%, then
he takes 16 minutes more to cover the same distance. Find the time taken by him to cover the
distance at original speed.
Solution:
New speed= 80% of original speed
Let t be the original time taken to cover the distance
(Speed 1)* (time 1) = (Speed 2)* (time 2)
s * t = 4/5 s * (t+16)
t = 64 minutes

3.If I walk at 4 kmph, I reach the office 5 minutes late and if I walk at 5 kmph, I reach 10
minutes early. How far my office is?
Solution:
(Speed 1)* (time 1) = (Speed 2)* (time 2)
𝑡+5 𝑡−10
4*( 60 ) = 5*( 60 )
t =70 min
70+5
Distance = speed * time= 4* 60 = 5 km

4. Walking at ¾th of his speed, a person is 10 minutes late to his office. Find his usual time to

(Speed 1)* (time 1) = (Speed 2)* (time 2)
𝑡+16
15*( 60 ) = 16*t
t =4 hour
Distance = speed * time= 4* 16= 64 km
6.A man travelled from the village to the post office at the rate of 25kmph and walked back at
the rate of 4 kmph. If the whole journey took 5 hours 48 minutes, find the distance of the post
office from the village.
Solution:
2𝑥𝑦 2∗25∗4 200
Average speed = 𝑥+𝑦= 25+4 = 29
4 200 29
Distance travelled (to & fro) in 5 hr 48 min i.e., 5 5 hr = * == 40 km
29 5
So, Actual distance= 40/2=20 km

Solution:
Let the speeds of the train be S1 and S2 m/s
Total distance covered = sum of the lengths of two trains= 250+200= 450m
When they run in the same direction, relative speed = S1-S2=450/30=15
When they run in the opposite direction, relative speed = S1+S2=450/10=45
Solving above two equations, we get,
