2 Objectives of the Study

This study aims to prepare and characterize paper using superhydrophobic calcium carbonate
nanoparticles derived from waste egg shells. Specifically it aims to:
• prepare CaCO3 powder from waste eggshell.
• functionalize the prepared CaCO3 powder with stearic acid.
• characterize the functionalized powder using X-Ray Diffraction, SEM, FTIR,
and EDX.
• measure the contact angle of the powder using the Image J application.
• coat the functionalized CaCO3 and optimize the loading ratio of the Polystyrene and the
functionalized calcium carbonate unto paper.
• characterize the paper using X-Ray Diffraction, SEM, FTIR, and EDX.
• measure the contact angle of the paper using Image J application.
