Four years and counting, is the CPA license really worth it?

Dreams and goals are what we cling unto despite of the difficulties and trials we face. We
continue to strive for the best just to get or to attain the goals we have set. A year or so, I will be
taking the CPA licensure examinations and it will dictate whether become a CPA or not but
nonetheless, is the CPA license really worth it after the long journey?

I personally believe that everything has a place and designation in this world; this may be
on the uptown or on the downside. But we may alter everything if we try to integrate our inputs
to the preset designation. I believe that the CPA license is worth it for the reasons that first, it is a
manifestation of the long yet joyful journey, it is the reward that every accountancy student is
aiming for and secondly, it is worth it because you can open new doors and opportunities for
your life.

According to Sigmund Freud, rewards have been a great motivating factor for a human
person. As students taking the accountancy program, we all aim for the “CPA” to be attached to
our names in the future; a reward that is I believe would compensate all the tears and sleepless
nights during college years. The CPA license is also a manifestation of the hard works of our
parents who sent us to school supporting us even up to the last centavo on their pockets. The
license would somehow lessen and lighten their thinking of their loans hoping that someday, you
will regain them from indebtedness.

“But is it enough to just have the CPA title on our names?” that is the question that most
accountants ask and that brings me to my next point, the CPA title is not just a title but also a
door opener that can give more opportunities for us. I believe it is on the perspective of the
person; on how he see things because it is true that having the CPA title on one’s name would
not render him to be wealthy person but it is on his determination to find the doors that opened
for him and give his best on the opportunities he had acquired.

At the end of the day, it would be the person’s opinion that would prevail but hearing and
listening to other persons’ view would somehow influence his thoughts. To sum up, I believe
that still, CPA license is worthy of aiming and fighting for because it is a clear manifestation of
our efforts throughout college years and it is a gate opener that would lead us to a greater world
and better version of us provided that we give our just part in the process.
If you were to travel back in time and get a chance to meet your younger self, would you
convince him/her to enroll in another course?

We often are choices in life and these choices are what make us where we are right now.
It is possible that our situation right now is a result of the option we have chosen.

When I was young, I always thought of time traveling and the reason was always to
correct my mistakes in life, of course the not serious ones. But as time pass by, I realized that
time travelling is not as easy as I thought way back childhood. But nonetheless, if I were to travel
back and get a chance to meet my younger self, I believe I have a lot of things to talk to him and
ask him to change. Some of these are the crazy things I did before that caused my knees to suffer
and up to now, it is evident to the scars on it, the little fights with my playmates and the like. But
never have I ever thought of convincing my old self to change the course I enrolled. It is because
I have seen the beauty of accounting and its significance in every aspect of life.

Before college, I have this very dream of becoming a chemist; I want the idea of creating
solutions, formulas, mixing chemicals and exploring chemistry. But that came to an end when I
was advised to take another course since my parents cannot afford to send me in MAPUA – my
dream school for chemical engineering. That’s the time were I was force to schmooze another
course that is relevant to my interest in mathematics and numbers. And so I enrolled
Accountancy for real expecting that it would be as easy as finding x in algebra. I thought it is all
about the basic math where you compute for something and tada! There is the answer. But it is a
complete false speculation. I realized that accounting is not just about math but also full of
analysis and understanding & application of framework and standards.

During first year, I struggled a lot because I am weak in analysis. I am a person who is
very form based and practical. But that changed as years gone by. I have learned to understand
things and apply it technically. Also, I was able to realize the possible opportunities of
accountants in the actual job environment.

So if I were to meet my old self in the past, I would probably not convince him to enroll
in another course because I have seen the usefulness of accounting in daily life and I have
learned to love the program. Also, I can see myself as one of the successful CPAs in the
Philippines in the nearest time. To end, everything happens for a reason, maybe accountancy is
the real thing for me and maybe being a CPA would lead me closer to the plans I have set for the
future.
