Thirteen Toyes
from the Jane Pickering[e] Lute Book
https://renaissance-ukukele.blogspot.co.uk
Introduction
The original manuscript book has Jane Pickering[e]'s insignia, but it is not clear who she
was – possibly a member of a politically active Yorkshire family. It also bears the arms of
James I / VI. Diana Poulton believes it is “her own personal collection of music”, but Rob
MacKillop thinks it is of Scottish origin.
The Toyes or Toys are short, simple pieces used to fill in the gaps between much more
demanding lute works. These arrangements for ukulele include 13 of the 15 Toyes; of the
other two, one is unsuitable for the ukulele and the other very trivial.

* I have taken the names from a concordance in the thesis: English Lute Manuscripts and Scribes
1530-1630, a doctoral dissertation by Julia Craig-McFeely, awarded by Oxford in 1993, appendix
1d, viewable here: http://www.ramesescats.co.uk/thesis/App1d.pdf.
† Pieces set in C on the lute transcribe directly to D on the ukulele, but since much of the music
demands use of the root in the bass, I have transposed some to G. Some pieces may be in major or
minor mode, and it was the convention to end minor pieces on a major chord.

The melody is “Bara Faustus [Barrow Foster’s] Dream”, the song is known as “Come, sweet love, let sorrow cease”.
The arrangement sticks quite closely to the words and melody I have found in “English song and ballad music”, so
they have been interpolated into the piece.

The repeat structure of the piece is not clear on the MS, so I have repeated each theme thus: A A’ B B’. There is scope for elaboration on the repeats.

Because we have so little range on the ukulele, the bass can be confused with the melody; therefore, the melody will
need greater emphasis.
